Who Was Peter?

Peter was a passionate and devoted disciple, an “eyewitness of the sufferings of Christ.” Once a simple fisherman, Peter became a key leader in the early Christian church. He is often referred to as the “rock” on which Jesus built His church (Matthew 16:18). Peter did life with Jesus. He experienced Christ’s miracles firsthand and was entrusted with the keys to the kingdom. Peter witnessed the highs and lows of following Christ.

Through his letters, Peter reminds us that we, too, are chosen, loved, and called to a purpose beyond our understanding. If you’ve ever felt imperfect or made mistakes in your Christian walk, you’ll find a kindred spirit in Peter. He also had his moments of doubt and denials, yet he was still deeply loved and used by God in extraordinary ways, and you can be, too.

The Purpose of the Letters

Peter wrote these letters, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, during challenging times for early Christians. Persecution was on the rise, and believers faced increasing pressure from society. False teachers were also seeking to divide and lead the church astray. Through his two letters, Peter sought to encourage and build up the early Christians, remind them of their divine calling, and offer guidance in navigating the struggles and trials they were facing.

1st Peter

This letter is a heartfelt message of hope and resilience. Peter talks about our heavenly inheritance, the importance of standing firm in faith amidst sufferings, and the role each believer has in the grand tapestry of God’s kingdom. You’ll find themes of enduring love, grace, and the transformative power of Christ’s sacrifice.

2nd Peter

In Peter’s second letter, he dives into the importance of discernment and staying grounded in the truth. He warns against false teachers and reminds believers to grow in their knowledge and relationship with Jesus. This letter is a call to action, urging us to stand firm, grow deeper in our faith, and always be ready for Christ’s return.

Although written centuries ago, both letters still speak to our present-day challenges, struggles, and hopes. They are a reminder of God’s enduring love, the importance of steadfast faith, and the promise of eternal life.

Today, even as society shifts and challenges rise, Peter’s insights remain a steadfast anchor, guiding us through our journey of faith. So, sweet friend, as we start this 6-week study, let’s dive deep into the heart of Peter’s letters. Together, let’s discover the transformative power of God’s Word as we live it out in our lives.
