“This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,
the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.”
Matthew 1:1

The genealogy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is very interesting. It plays a central part in the New Testament and the Bible as a whole.

Jesus has a genealogy which is both divine and human. That is because Jesus is fully God and also fully man.

I will repeat that again: Jesus is 100% God and 100% man – fully divine and fully human.

This is a very difficult concept for believers to grasp. However, understanding Jesus’ divinity as well as His humanity is one of the fundamental principles of the Christian faith.

“Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me;
your throne will be established forever.”
2 Samuel 7:16 (NIV)

We see in Matthew 1:1 that Jesus is called the “Son of David.” Though David lived over 1,000 years before Christ, God made a promise to David that the Messiah would come from His family line, which He fulfilled in the birth of Jesus.

“Son of David” with a capital S is a title reserved for only One person who has ever walked the earth. It is applied only to Jesus of Nazareth. By addressing Jesus as Son of David in the Bible, it demonstrates that Jesus is the long-awaited and hoped for Messiah.

Matthew begins by calling Jesus the Son of David, indicating His royal origin. He is also called the Son of Abraham, indicating that He was an Israelite.

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star!”
Revelation 22:16

God not only promised that the Messiah would come through David’s family line but that He would also reign as the eternal and perfect King forever.

“When your days are over and you rest with your fathers,
I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish His kingdom.”
2 Samuel 7:12-13

This promise caused the people to long to see David’s Son, the One who would rule forever.

Though the people of Israel were looking for a conquering warrior to be the Messiah, God sent a lowly, humble baby who would grow in wisdom and preach of the coming kingdom of God. He would perform miracles and love those around Him, even those who were most despised and rejected.

He came to live the life we couldn’t. He was nothing like what Israel expected, but neither was His genealogy.

God used some of the most unlikely and imperfect people to be in the family line of the Savior. Genealogies show us that God is sovereign in His purposes and in the lives of individuals. No matter what you are currently going through, He is sovereignly at work in your life, as well.

I pray that the Holy Spirit opens your heart to the truth about Jesus’ genealogy and that He continues to give you the passion and desire to know and read more about Him.

Peace and grace unto you,
