SOAP verse for Armor of God study, Week 4 - Day 5

A college professor once shared with me his definition of faith: “Faith is choosing to believe that the Word of God is true regardless of our feelings, circumstances, or societal norms.”

Regardless of the doubts we may feel at times, regardless of the difficult and trying situations we face, regardless of what the world around us says is true:

Faith is choosing to believe God’s Word is true no matter what.

This definition of faith has stuck with me for many years as I’ve walked with the Lord, and I often find myself coming back to it. In seasons when I’m plagued by doubts of God’s goodness or sovereignty, I choose to believe Romans 8:28. God is working all things for the good of those who love Him.

When I can’t understand what God is doing or why He’s not answering specific prayers, I trust the words of Habbakuk. God is doing a work I wouldn’t believe if told. And as the world changes and truth becomes relative to whoever holds the mic, I’m anchored in knowing that every word of God proves true (Proverbs 30:5) and that His truth is unchanging.

Faith is choosing to believe that God’s Word is true no matter what.

Why is that important?

When we have faith, we have the power to conquer the world.

When Jesus walked this earth He told His disciples, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

When we have faith we have access to the same power that Christ used to overcome the world. Through our faith in Christ we have the power to persevere through trials, to not fall into sin when tempted, and to trust and have hope in the midst of suffering.

With faith, comes power. Conquering power.

If today you find yourself struggling to believe in God’s Word, in who He says He is, in the saving grace of Jesus Christ, that’s ok. Confess that to the Lord. Even when we struggle to believe, God is faithful to prove Himself to be true. “If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, since he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:13).

Ask Him for faith to believe. He will be faithful.
