Why does God make promises?
We often make promises we can’t keep, and we’ve all been hurt by broken promises. It’s easy to start wondering if any promise is really worth trusting.
But God is different. When He makes a promise, He already has a plan to keep it.
God never makes a promise He does not intend to keep, especially when it comes to our eternal salvation. God makes many promises, promises to encourage us, bless us, equip us, discipline us, and care for us. He makes promises that give us hope, purpose, and meaning.
He is a Promise Keeper.
The greatest promise He made was to send a Messiah, a Rescuer who would save His people from sin and death. This Messiah would come at a specific point in history to fulfill all that God had said about Him.
When God promised to send a Messiah to save His people from sin, He already had a plan to do it. God not only made one promise to send a Messiah, but He also gave His people many promises of how He would do it. He not only let His people know that the Messiah was coming, but also how He would come into the world and what He would do, so they knew what to look out for.
This Advent season, as we prepare our hearts to celebrate Christmas, let’s focus on God’s fulfilled promises. He promised to send a Messiah, and He kept every single promise He made about this Messiah. Jesus, the Christ-child, came as a baby and grew into a man, a man who was fully God and fully human, a man who would save God’s people from sin and death as the fulfillment of God’s greatest promise.
Our God is a Promise Keeper. All of His promises are “yes” and “amen” in Christ! Jesus, the greatest promise fulfilled, is our Messiah, our Redeemer, our Hope, and our Peace.
