Social media has created some blurred lines and confusion within our society. We can “follow” people that inspire us, while technology allows us the ability to watch lives unfold through a screen we keep in our back pocket. Over time, as we watch the highlight reels, we might feel like we know these inspiring people we follow. It’s wise to take a step back occasionally and re-evaluate reality and relationship with it, asking ourselves what is real and true and what is not. It’s dangerously easy to create a false opinion about people we don’t know.
The same can and should apply to our relationship with Christ. Has our knowledge of Him grown from the first time we heard the Good News? Is all that we know of Him based on what others have told us, or have we taken ownership of our faith and developed a true and personal relationship with Him? Do we know Him? Has our faith become a spectator sport? Have we become content with the basics of who Jesus is and what He has done while missing the grand adventure of living on mission with and for Him?
Jesus knew that the people in the temple were confused. When He cried out in John 7:28, “You both know me and where I am from,” it was a strategic choice of words. They might have known where He was born and maybe even knew members of His family, but Jesus was very clear about being sent from God. There was so much more to Him than being Jesus from Nazareth. He told them that they did not know God; how shocking for the Jews who prided themselves in truly knowing God.
Jesus mentioned being sent by God a few times in these two short verses (John 7:28–29). He was a God-man on a mission. He operated under the full authority of God. He relayed everything that the Father told Him, and when they rejected Jesus and His teaching, the people also rejected God. Being sent by God meant that Jesus’ existence began before His birth through the virgin, Mary. He existed with God before He was sent to earth. “But I know him, because I have come from him and he sent me” (John 7:29).
This is why it is so important that we believe the truth about Jesus. To know Jesus, we must know and understand His testimony. We can only know Him intimately by spending quality time with Him. Is your aim in life to know God and make Him known? If so, spend time in the Word and pray often. Pray for the Lord to open your eyes to see Him and know Him. We can only know God through His Son, Jesus.
It’s disappointing when we realize that we didn’t know that person on social media after all—when they do or say something that didn’t line up with what we thought we knew of them. However, it’s even more tragic when someone rejects Jesus but believes that they know God.
It is impossible to know God and deny His Son.
Eternal life is found in Christ alone.
