How is it possible to have deep joy in the midst of overwhelming sorrow and suffering? Paul is not only a great example to us, but he also points us to the answer. Out of 104 verses in this power-packed book, Jesus is mentioned directly or indirectly 51 times. In the end, Paul teaches us that Jesus is the Author and only Source of true joy.
The things of this world can never satisfy our deepest longings. Without Jesus there is no salvation, and therefore no lasting joy. Without Jesus there is no way to overcome our circumstances, to love people who are hard to love, to reconcile, to forgive, and to live godly lives.
Together, let’s open our Bibles and seek to better know our Savior and the unspeakable joy and contentment He offers to those follow Him… reading and writing what God speaks into our hearts along the way.

What you and I REALLY need…
She sat on the cold pavement, hunching her torso over into her lap to better shield her body from the harsh winter wind. The forecast had predicted dropping temperatures overnight, and it appeared as though she would transition to her makeshift bed in that exact same...
Think About These Things
This is a lesson I've had to learn the hard way. And if I'm completely honest with you, it's a lesson that I'm still learning. What you think about matters. I recently came home from a long day of meetings, various kid pickups and drop-offs, basketball practice, and...
The Joy of Giving Encouragement
What a precious gift encouragement is. I can remember moments when the right word at the right time was instrumental in breathing fresh perspective, courage, and hope into challenging seasons in my life - even if I wasn’t necessarily deserving of that encouraging...
You are a Citizen of Heaven
I grew up in Miami where over half of the population lives with their hearts in two countries. You see, in the early 60’s my mom got on a plane with just two sets of clothes in her suitcase and fled the only home she’d ever known to find freedom. My mom finished high...
Our Race Strategy
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead… I press on to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 3:13-14 Can you imagine the guilt Paul must have faced once he realized the magnitude of his sin? He had...
Where Does Your Joy Come From?
No matter how strong we think our faith is, we all struggle with believing many of the things that Jesus tells us. One of these things has to do with the source of our joy. We think we have it all figured out - that we know how life works best. When it comes to joy we...
The Value of Godly Relationships
"So are you two sisters?" My friend and I looked at each other from across the tiny exam room and smiled big as her oncologist waited for our answer. You could say that. Definitely sisters. Sisters in Christ for the long haul... We first met as new mamas in the back...
Working Out
Working out. Just the phrase makes me feel lazy these days. I’m out of shape and I know it, so the task of working out looms and feels overwhelming. When I say this, I’m daunted thinking about lacing up my running shoes in this chilly fall air. The phrase is obviously...
The Joy of Serving
If it weren’t for people… work would be great. If it weren’t for people… church would be effortless. If it weren’t for people… humble service would be easy. Sacrificial service is something many people admire but may not truly desire to practice. Our culture values...
To Live Is Christ
It could sound to some like Paul is tired of this life and is looking forward to death. Life certainly wasn’t easy for him. He was persecuted, shipwrecked, beaten, at times poor, and was imprisoned. But Paul is not looking to escape this life. He is happy to live...
Our Confidence in Suffering
Have you ever had days... months... maybe even years in your life when it seemed like you were in a "prison" of suffering that you couldn't escape? Maybe you've grieved the death of a loved one, the halt of a dream, or you've been chained to a long road of physical or...
What God Starts, He Will Complete
“Mama, look!” My six-year-old squealed as she ran into the kitchen carrying her lopsided pumpkin. It was an easy going Saturday morning. As I cleaned up from a late breakfast, my husband and our girls were headed outside to carve their pumpkins. My baby girl came over...
Philippians Introduction
Welcome to our study of the book of Philippians. Philippians is actually a letter written to the Christians in Philippi, a place that Paul visited on his second missionary journey. Interestingly, it was named after Philip of Macedonia, the father of Alexander the...
