Lent is a season. It is a season of emptying, giving up, cleaning out, and even dying. Lent is a season where we express sorrow over Christ’s death and the cause of His death: our sin. This forty-day period reflects other significant periods from Scripture, including the forty days of rain Noah experienced during the flood, the forty years of the Israelites wandering in the desert, and the forty days Jesus fasted in the wilderness.

Lent is a time when we intentionally stop and create space in our lives for our relationship with God.

Our lives are often so full of activity and our bodies so full of food that we have no space for God. But Lent gives us an intentional season every year to make that room available.

Though our study is six weeks long, Lent covers a bit more time. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues until Easter Sunday. For seven weeks we will reflect on what it means to empty ourselves to be filled with Christ. Traditionally, fasting is meant to be for six days during the week with Sunday serving as a feast day. This practice reminds us that, while we focus on the sorrow of Christ’s death and its cause, we also can celebrate that He has already claimed victory through His death and resurrection.

Over the next six weeks leading up to Easter, we will study some of the traditional themes of Lent. These include fasting, filling, repentance, charity, and the Triduum. In fasting, we focus on removing distractions and things that pull us away from God. Then, we’ll focus on filling the emptiness we have created by reading Scripture, praying, and other spiritual disciplines. We’ll practice repentance and understand its importance and the freedom that comes through it. As we focus on charity, we’ll see how giving expresses faith and represents how we empty ourselves to be filled with Christ. Finally, we’ll study the Triduum, where we’ll focus on the darkness created by our sins and how we celebrate what Jesus has done for us.

As we walk into the season of Lent, let’s open our hearts to see what God has for us. Let’s join this centuries-long tradition of reflecting on and celebrating the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
