Do you remember singing the old hymns at church as a child? For me, that brings back memories full of both giggles and frowns. What do all these words of old mean? One song that puzzled me was ‘On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand.’ What does it mean to stand on a solid rock that is no rock made of stone? I had no clue.
Through studying God’s Word, I grew to understand that standing on a rock is about my foundation. My solid ground is the ground on which I stand to be a steadfast person. Through studying the Bible, I learned so much about my identity in Christ. I am not defined by what the world says I am, and I’m not what I can achieve; I’m who Christ says I am. Through His Word, He tells me I’m loved. He tells me I’m a new creation. He tells me I’m made in His image.
Four years ago I started translating for Love God Greatly. I was blessed so much by reading the words in English, thinking about how to translate them best and rereading my translation to make it better. I would consider all the words carefully. Fixing my eyes on Jesus while writing helped me to be aware of my Rock. The Draw Near study helped me to study God’s Word in depth. The Words Matter study taught me so much about capturing thoughts and filling my mind with God’s Truth. Jesus Our Everything taught me so much about the superiority of Christ. There is a lifetime of learning to be found in studying the Bible.
The Bible taught me so much about who God is. Through His Word, God teaches me how to stand on my Rock. When my heart is overwhelmed, I want to go to the Rock that is higher than I. For God is my refuge and my strong tower. More words of old, from songs of old. They don’t make me giggle or frown anymore, now they fill my heart with awe and gratitude for who He is.
