Why are you here?

What has God called you to do?

Who has God called you to reach?

What is your mission statement?

For believers, it is imperative that we know we are thinking and acting according to God’s Word. God has called us to be His representatives. Through the Holy Spirit, we have been enabled with the authority of God to act upon this world. What an amazing and overwhelming reality!

The Bible reveals to believers one of the roles we are to fulfill while we are here on earth. The primary role that all of us have been given is to share and to spread the message of salvation.

God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for the sins of all humanity. Jesus conquered sin and death as He rose from the grave three days after His crucifixion, all according to the Scriptures. When we believe in what Jesus has accomplished, when we confess and turn away from our sins, when we make Jesus our Lord and Savior, we receive salvation. Jesus eliminates our separation from God for all eternity. That is the Good News!

There are so many people in this world who are struggling and suffering. They desperately need the message that we have: the message of hope; the message of deliverance; the message of Christ.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed  Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” – Luke 4:18–19

These verses make up Jesus’ mission statement. At His first public proclamation to the religious leaders, Jesus told who He is and what He is called by God to do.

God anointed Jesus to fulfill all of these tasks both spiritually and physically. He came to heal the spiritual and physical damage caused by sin.

Jesus was anointed to preach the gospel to the spiritually poor. To be spiritually poor is to recognize and understand that we have absolutely nothing of worth to offer God. Because of our sin, we are completely empty spiritually and can do nothing to deliver ourselves. Once we receive salvation, we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was anointed to heal the brokenhearted. I know this phrase is not in some of your Bibles in the book of Luke, but it can be found in Isaiah 61:1. Every one of us has been broken-hearted before, and Jesus came to comfort and help us through our sorrow.

Jesus was anointed to proclaim release to the captives. He grants us freedom and release from spiritual bondage to sin. In Christ, we have been set free.

Jesus was anointed to give sight to the blind. He did this physically by healing blind people, but more importantly, He came to give sight to those who are spiritually blinded by Satan.

Jesus was anointed to free those who are oppressed. For those who have been mistreated, shattered, overlooked, and broken down by life, Jesus sets us free.

Jesus was anointed to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord’s favor. This is a reference to the Jewish Year of Jubilee. It was a year when all debts were forgiven, and all land was returned to its original owner. Everyone got a brand new start and a fresh beginning.

That is what we get in Jesus. He makes everything new. Once we have been saved, we are a new creation in Christ. The old is gone, the new has come. It is all found in Jesus.

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

Why are you here?

What is your mission statement?

Each one of us has talents that God has placed within us. He desires that we use those talents for the kingdom of God. Everything that we do should bring praise to Him!

Everything that God has placed within us is so that we can meet the needs of those suffering around us. It is so we can give hope to a dying world. The time is now!

How can we pray for you as you seek to carry out your mission for God?

Peace and grace to you,

Week 2 Challenge:

This week’s memory verse focuses on what Jesus came to do: proclaim good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, give sight to the blind, free the oppressed, and proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. As you study this week, find examples of how Jesus has done each of these things, both in the Gospel of Luke and in your own life.
