I am so excited to be studying the book of Galatians with so many women from around the world, and I can’t believe the first week is coming to an end. I am sure Galatians will stretch us but also grow us in our love for truth. Let me share with you what I have been learning this week…
There wasn’t a church in Galatia until Paul came in preaching and making disciples, probably during his first missionary journey (Acts 13:1-14:28). Shortly after Paul plants this church and moves on, the church falls under the spell of false teachers. These false teachers, also called “Judaizers,” were telling the church that in order to be “real” Christians they would have to basically become Jewish. This was a false gospel because they were teaching that salvation comes through our works + Jesus’ works.
When Paul finds out he is flabbergasted. How could the Galatians so quickly buy into this “different gospel” (Gal 1:6)? How could they turn their backs on what they had been taught by Paul through the leading of the Holy Spirit?
Paul couldn’t keep silent. He cared deeply for these brothers and even more so for truth and therefore had to lovingly but firmly correct them.
Paul loved the souls of men, and to tolerate spiritual poison is to aid and abet the murder of souls. ~ Charles Spurgeon
It looks like at this point some of the people were questioning Paul’s authority, so he quickly reminds them that the truth he received did not come from men, but from Christ himself (1:12).
He says to the Galatians something like this: “You want to know that I am speaking the truth; that I am an Apostle? Then look at what I once was and who I am now. I was once a die-hard Jew–a pharisee! I was ruthless in upholding the Jewish customs and beliefs to the point of murder. Then Christ revealed himself to me and it was only through the workings of God that a man like me, who formerly took great joy in persecuting the church, would now be willing to risk life and comfort, to teach the very message I was once so set against.”
He wanted them to understand that he was not just repeating some other man’s doctrine, but that what he had taught them came to him in a supernatural way from God. He was the last real Apostle.
There are three implications here that are important for us all take with us:
1. The gospel we preach must be protected from false teachers. It is very important that we are careful and precise with the way we talk about Christ’s work on our behalf and the salvation we receive from it. We are not saved because of a prayer we pray or an aisle we walk. We are not saved because of how much hospitality we show, how generous we are, or how clean our speech is. God does not accept us because of how often we read our Bibles, our political positions, or our attendance at church.
Salvation comes only through faith in Christ and this also is a gift from God so that no one can boast.
2. No one can mess up so much that God cannot save them. Look at the life of Paul before his conversion. He was one messed up, scary man. He was filled with hatred, self-righteousness, and murder – all in the name of religion. And yet despite possessing such deep blinding sin, God reached down, gave him faith, changed his heart, and used him not only as an amazing missionary and church planter, but also as one who would write most of the New Testament. This is amazing grace and this same grace is able to work in our lives as well.
3. Any of us have the potential of being lured away by false teaching. As strong as you think you are, and solid as your faith is, anyone can become confused and start wandering from the truth. Let’s not be so proud that we think such sin is beyond us. We must be a people of the word who examine not just what is being taught by others, but also what be believe in our own hearts.
The gospel is precious because it cost God everything and us nothing. It is also precious because it is powerful. It brings forgiveness that we cannot earn, change that we cannot muster up, and acceptance by God that we so desperately need. No wonder Paul was incredibly passionate about preserving the integrity and truth about this gospel. Let’s pray for this kind of passion in our own lives.
Looking to Jesus,
Wonderfully said, Jen….Thank you
Karen,
Thank you for your encouraging words. Jen’s post was sooo good!

I myself got saved but because I did not know the Word as I ought (I took it for granted and thought my love for Jesus was enough) I found myself lost in a cult! Like Jen said above, everyone has the potential of being led astray. Getting sucked into a cult has nothing to do with someone’s level of intelligence, because cult leaders, like all false teachers, will prey on a person’s emotions. They are master manipulators. Anyway, the “ministry” started out Christian and she stated many truths that my husband and I totally agreed with, but once we let our guards down and started trusting the pastor instead of the Word of God, damnable heresies started coming in like a flood. But like I said, I was not firmly grounded in the Word so my radar barely went off. And when it did, I rationalized it away. Long story short, 7 years later I finally began to pay attention to my inner doubts and questions and prayed for God to show me Truth. He opened my eyes and led me back to His Word. Now more than ever do I relate to Galatians 1:6-7 and Gal. 3:1 because I was one who was beguiled! And now more than ever do I believe in contending for the faith. Much of what I experienced in the cult is in the Christian “church” today! Witchcraft, Occultism, Eastern Mysticism, Gnosticm, and the New Age, but it is dressed up in Christian Jargon so no one really notices. People care more about SPIRITUAL /EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES than they do about the Scriptures. So yes, I have a fire in me to stand up against false teachings that are leading Christians like oxen to the slaughter. And I am very grateful to be part of this Bible Study, its has already deepened my intimacy with God and His Word.
wow Jennifer, that’s powerful stuff……and just as Paul was drawn by the Holy Spirit, so too were you, away from that cult……God’s love for His children never stops amazing me. There is no end at which He will stop to herd his sheep. Thank you for the very poignant words of wisdom.
Yes, He is a loving and most gracious God. Before knowing Him, I took offense when Christians said that God needs to be worshipped, but after walking with Him and experiencing His Goodness, I think, How can I NOT worship and praise Him? So now it grieves my heart to see the world worshipping everything under the sun but The One True God! The Jesus of the Bible is the only One worthy of such devotion, for He was the only One who died to save us!
Amen to that sister!
Jennifer,
To God be the glory! Praise God for your deliverance. Thank you for sharing!

Great testimony! Thanks for sharing. Praise God that your eyes and heart were opened.
Jennifer thank you for sharing your testimony! You are a true example of how Paul was. We can’t hide the past or downplay things that have happened to us. By sharing we learn from each other. Some of our churches will set up doctrines or things you need to do before your are part of the church. It’s so easy to come to Jesus that people think that they have to do more to be accepted by God. I followed my pastor when he left to start his own church because where he was people told him what he was allowed to preach and what subjects he was allowed to touch on. He states if it is in the Bible I am preaching it!
Great first week! It is a wonderful reminder from Paul’s story that not one of us is too far gone to be called by God to share the gospel.
Yes, Jan! That fills me with such hope when I am praying for my family members who are not Christ followers yet.
Lyli (LGG Encourager)
Amen Jan! And praise God for that because we need to share the Gospel. I’m so glad you had a great first week! (Jennifer, LGG Encourager)
Beautifully written Jen. Thank you. Everyone of us has been lead astray at one time in our life we need to trust God and his word and he will lead us back home.
Amen, Helen. I am so thankful that He pursues us.
One thing that stood out to me in this weeks study is that God chose us before we were born. He already knew what we would go through to be what He wants us to be. He knows what He is doing even when we can’t see it. Be Blessed!
Isn’t that incredible? God’s omniscience fills me with confidence because I know that nothing is a surprise to Him.
This bible study in Galatians has been exactly what our family needed this week. My grandson has been struggling with a lot of stress at school this year and years past. He would not open up to us and with dealing with all these emotions he became ill. He would be fine in his home environment but school was another matter. He finally opened up to us this week after reading Galatians 1:10. God’s spirit spoke to his heart. He was trying to please men and making himself miserable. He realized to be a servant of God, he was to please God not man. My grandson is little in stature, but is willing to stand tall in his faith and walk for Christ. He feels so much better about himself after making the decision to not be ashamed. Pray for him and us as we lean on God’s Word. Thank you for these studies.
Oh Hilda praise God he could finally open up to you and share what was going on! We will be praying for him. Blessings! – Edurne, LGG Leadership Team
This week was hard CAN NOT LIE!
I have discovered many things about myself, many things that I personally need to work on.
My focus this week has been prayer for my children in general.
I am a people pleaser, and have been in recovery for 11 years now. This weeks study really drove home to me. I believe that the enemy has been feeding me a lie, and I have been listening, that I am better in this area.
I find that I am hopeful and realize there is nothing I can do to make up for the things I have done because the price has been paid. The only thing I can do from this point on is to be obedient to Him.
Deborah Jo,
Thank you for sharing with us! I will be praying for you. I am so thankful that God loves us so much that He sent His Son to die on the cross for each and everyone of us. I am in need of His grace every single day. I hope that you have a great 2nd week in Bible Study. (Jennifer, LGG Encourager)
What I loved about today’s reading and thought was so important was that Paul didn’t just go off on his own. He went to meet with the Apostles. I think this shows that, just as we are to be on guard against false teachers out in the world, we have to remember that our own reason can be a false teacher. When we have no authoritative teaching of the Church to test our own inclinations against, it can be SO easy to read whatever we want into scripture and convince ourselves that it says what we want it to say, rather than what’s really there. Thinking you can be a “lone wolf” and interpret the Word all on your own is a recipe for false teachings galore.
How great is our God-that He’s always watching over us, protecting us & guiding us. So ready to step in & correct/redirect us when we stray off His appointed path . We are all called according to His purpose & thank God He never gives up on us
It doesn’t matter how many times I am reminded of the love and grace of God, I am still amazed! Praise God!
Thank you for your powerful and clear explanation of Galatians. Very inspiring.
I started this study after seeing the movie “War Room.” Such a powerful lesson on prayer, love and forgiveness! Just participating in this lesson is helping me set a daily time with God and His Word, and causing me to pray for people more often and with greater fervor. I am happy to dive into Galatians again! Thanks so much for putting this study together!!! God bless you all and everyone participating! May we all grow by leaps and bounds, and draw closer to our Father!
I love the the way the Holy Spirit lays it on your heart to speak the word. Beautiful!
