“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” ~ Galatians 2:17-21
In Galatians 1 Paul is adamant about the most important truth in our Christian faith: that salvation comes through faith alone in Christ alone.
“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” ~ Acts 4:12
This was also the battle cry of the Protestant Reformation. It was commonly expressed as the “Five Solas” which summarize our salvation:
Sola Scriptura, Salvation is revealed in Scripture alone.
Solus Christus, Salvation is found in Christ alone.
Sola Gratia, Salvation is entirely by grace alone.
Sola Fide, Salvation is received by faith alone.
Soli Deo Gloria, Salvation is given for the glory of God alone.
Paul chastises the Galatians for following the false teachers who were telling them that salvation is received through faith in Jesus, plus our obedience to the law.
As he continues his explanation of salvation by grace through faith throughout Galatians 2 he ends up stating that if we could save ourselves by obeying the law then Christ died for no purpose. Paul says that Christ had to come because we were, and are, unable to keep the law. In fact the law accuses, enslaves, and condemns us all as sinners.
God’s standard is a perfection of which we fall terribly short. This is why the gospel is such good news to the weak and powerless like ourselves. It is Christ who has done it all for us. He has kept the law, he has payed the debt, and he continues to work in his people. This is why Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me,” (vs. 20).
[H]ere in his own person he gives us an excellent description of the mysterious life of a believer. He is crucified, and yet he lives; the old man is crucified (Rom. 6:6), but the new man is living; he is dead to the world, and dead to the law, and yet alive to God and Christ; sin is mortified, and grace quickened.
– Matthew Henry (Commentary on Galatians)
Danger of Owing God
Salvation is all of grace. But we sometimes grow confused as to our response to that grace. All too often we look at what Christ has done for us and we feel like we owe him. We ask, “What can I do for Jesus?” And sometimes we feel the need to somehow pay Jesus back for his gift of salvation. There are 3 problems with this:
1) Salvation is a gift, and gifts are not to be paid for by the recipients. How would you feel if you bought someone a gift, a gift they would both need and love, and they wanted to pay you for it. To take payment would mean the gift wasn’t a gift, but a commodity.
2) There is nothing good enough or big enough that we can do to pay Jesus back for what has given us.
3) Christ is not done doing for us. He continues to work in us, to forgive, to change, to heal, to correct, and to grow us.
Read those verses again. What does it say? It says that now that Jesus has saved me my life is no longer about me – it is about Christ in me. So what are we to do since Christ has done and still is doing everything for us? Paul tells us in the second part of verse 20:
“And the life that I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God.”
Faith.
That is our response: to believe and to live by that faith. Faith believes that Christ has paid it all. Faith believes that Christ will complete his work in us. Faith trusts that Jesus is enough and that in Him alone our salvation is complete.
While there are numerous passages that tell us that we need to obey, this obedience is only possible because of Christ in us. Obedience is not the cause of our salvation, but the consequence of it.
Looking To Jesus,
Thank God for his grace! I’d be lost without it. To live by faith believing Christ is enough. I am trying to grow and change in so many areas and have felt like I’ve bumbled and stumbled through this week. I was so discouraged last night and broke down crying in my husband’s arms. He held me and encouraged me, reminding me of the truth to keep my eyes on Jesus and to live one day at a time. I try to worry and stress over the future and the what ifs and yet God just says to trust Him and believe in Him and to live one day at a time. Sometimes I think it takes more faith to live for just today and to leave the future to God! Well that’s what I am going to do. I want to be a woman of faith who can live each day to the fullest for Him bc I believe that he’s enough and all I need.
Lauren,
I’ve recently begun turning my what ifs into even if____. Even if _____ happens, God is faithful and will be with me in that moment. Trust in God, He has a plan, His timing is perfect as is His love for you.
Stephanie I love that! I’m going to have to start using the Even If method. Thank you for sharing it. (Jennifer, LGG Encourager)
What a beautiful perspective! Thanks. God is also reminding me the need to be prayerful and filling myself with the word. My focus needs to be HIM!
I can completely relate to you what you are feeling! I am constantly thinking about “whats next” in my life which steals the joy out of the now. I love this new way of thinking! Thank you!
Jesus paid it all ! Thankyou for Your amazing gift to me . I receive it with love.
This morning as I was reading this passage in my Bible. I saw a note that caught my attention.
If we look at the word revival –we see there is not only a letter in the middle a–its a word–it’s I ! Its not about I or me ! Its about Jesus and what HE did on the cross. So lets remove I and replace it with the cross (t).
Mia thank you for sharing that is awesome. Lets get rid of the I and the me and replace it with cross! Its all about Jesus! Sheila, LGG Encourager
I’ve just begun another study on the book of Revelation. We are starting in the book of Genesis first to see that God’s amazing plan to redeem us was in place before he ever created us. That’s how much He loves us. God is Holy and Perfect and once sin entered the relationship we were all lost. God and sin can not co-exist. So He determined to free us from that bondage and the only way was through the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus. We, feeble and selfish people, could never do it, never be good enough.Imperfection can never in and of itself become perfect! Oh how I thank my God, the All Powerful, Holy and Perfect One, who loved me that much, loves each of us that much, to give up his only Son so that I, we , might live with Him. How unworthy we are. But because of God’s Grace we are covered by the blood of the Perfect One and we are made right with God. Praise be to the Lamb of God who sits at the right hand of the Throne of God interceding for us. Believe it, stand firm on it, rest in it, go out and share it! I can’t wait to meet each of you when our Savior comes again!
Tori-
Thank you for sharing with us. I can’t praise God enough for loving us so much that He sent His Son to die on the cross for me and you. I can’t wait for all us to meet in glory either, I think it is going to be a grand reunion. (Jennifer, LGG Encourger)
Tori, is the Revelation study online at a class at your church? I have been feeling a push to study Revelation but I know that without other people, I will never get through it and, if I did, I would be seriously confused and probably scared half to death by the end!
A lightbulb just appeared over my head! FAITH.
That’s it, that’s my response to EVERYTHING Christ has done for me! This verse, one I’ve read countless times before, and even memorized early in in my Christian walk, has always left me with that feeling that now I must respond by doing something for Him. Living a certain way, showing Him and the world around me that I am a new creation. But then my flesh takes over and my sin nature overwhelms me and I end up feeling like a failure!
But read this verse again.
The only thing I can do, the only thing Christ wants me to do, is to respond to Him in faith! The faith that He can, and He WILL, overcome my flesh and my sin nature. He’s not finished with me yet. I’m still under construction. I just need to have faith that He’s working on me and that when I finally see Him face to face, I will reflect His image perfectly!
Thank you so much Mistie for sharing! I love when the Holy Spirit gives us revelation. I think it was a deeper understanding. I look forward to having one as well through this study. Keep your eyes on Jesus
Jen,
Just wanted you to know that your summary today was awesome. You hit the mark today. Thank God for grace, for Jesus, and his word!
The thing that hit my hardest was Galatians 2:21 paraphrasing it said that if the law could save us, then Christ dies for nothing. That hurt my heart because many times I have been guilty of ‘doing’ instead of believing and having faith. When I think I have done terrible things that I can’t be forgiven for, I am saying that Jesus and His precious, life giving blood are not enough for me. I need to work on strengthening my faith muscle…a LOT!
On the other hand, I am elated that the Word convicted me about that! It tells me that God knows me and that, while this Scripture and verse mean different things to different people, it is exactly the same Word being read. Proof again that God’s Word is a living thing, ready to help any of God’s people when they need it. It uplifts, comforts, guides and convicts BECAUSE we have faith in Him and He loves and has faith in us!
Our God is just such an awesome God. He knows us so well! Thankfully He knows we so want to be worthy, but in our humanness, it’s so impossible! Just like that popular song says-“how can I keep from Singing your praise, how can I ever say enough, how amazing is your love”. Thank you Jesus for Your love is truly amazing & I could never, never say enough!
What a powerful summary Jen. Thank you. This bible study is already giving me the food I craved. To say “I trust you Jesus” is my mantra. God loving me so much that He sent His son to save me is why I trust Jesus. Nothing else will do. My faith keeps me where my works used to allow me to hope. Now I know!
For 20 years I sat under false teachers. For 8 years I was taught that you could lose your salvation. The next 12 years I was taught that you are saved through faith alone through Christ alone BUT now that you’re saved *prove it* by your good works (lack of good works could very well mean you didn’t have salvation to begin with). Both were works based religions. Yikes! Praise God He pulled me out of all that and brought us to a church that preaches salvation is through faith alone in Christ alone (period!). For years I’ve struggled with knowing if I was truly saved. I’ve literally been gobbling up this simple truth of salvation. Can’t read and meditate on it enough! It’s like I’m hearing it for the first time. So so ridiculously happy to finally be hearing the real truth of salvation! God has made it so simple for us: believe & trust in Jesus Christ. HE did all the work!
I am in debts for Rs. 250000/-. Pray for my redemption
