Welcome to our You Are Forgiven study!
I hope you are just as excited and ready to learn as we are. This study is going to take us on a wild ride. We will examine the heavy chains of sin and depravity, as well as the heights of forgiveness, acceptance, and freedom.
But we have to start with the sober before we can get to the joyful, so this week will be a heavy week. We have to start with why we need forgiveness in the first place. Most of us know that it is because we are riddled with sin.
What is sin?
Sin is anything that goes against the will of God. It is doing what God has forbidden or not doing what God has commanded we should do. In short, sin is breaking the law of God.
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. – 1 John 3:4
Sin affects every single part of us (John 8:34). It affects our minds, our hearts (Jeremiah 17:9), our emotions, and our spiritual conditions (Proverbs 21:10). It has skewed our view of God and of ourselves. It is what some theologians call “total depravity.”
Augustine said: “Sin is believing the lie that you are self-created, self-dependent, and self-sustained.”
The study of sin, also called hamartiology, is very important because without a proper understanding of sin we will never fully understand the depth of Christ’s sacrifice or the incredible forgiveness of God.
Sin has such a grip on mankind that we cannot free ourselves. We can’t even have true affection for God because sin has turned our hearts hard and cold as stone.
A stony heart is the worst heart. If it were bronze, it might be melted in the furnace; or it might be bent with the hammer. But a stony heart is such, that only the arm of God can break it—and only the blood of Christ can soften it! – Thomas Watson
Most devastatingly, sin has – as Isaiah tells us – created a separation between us and God that is so vast that we cannot bridge it.
Understanding sin is the first step towards understanding our need for forgiveness.
Sin has a firm hold on us, and if our sin does not produce in us tears of sadness or “a broken heart” (as David put it), then the forgiveness we have through Jesus will not seem very precious and will not produce in us a “shout to the Lord” kind of joy.
We were once lost, with no hope of our own, but the mighty and gentle hand of God pulled us out of the mud and and mire (Psalm 40:2), set us on the rock that is Jesus and gave us a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26). This is undeserved mercy and overwhelming grace. This is forgiveness.
Be always greatly humbled by your remaining sin, and never think that you lie low enough for it, but yet don’t be at all discouraged or disheartened by it. Although we are exceedingly sinful, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, the preciousness of whose blood, the merit of whose righteousness, and the greatness of whose love and faithfulness infinitely overtop the highest mountains of our sins. – Jonathan Edwards

I enjoyed reading your blog post today, it contains so much about sins, that made me think of any hidden sins in my heart. I love that quote You have included by Thomas Watson, I never heard of that quote before and I think I will make that as one of my “favorite quote”, the reason being was I can relate to it , for I once have a stony heart, and it is indeed hammered by God strong hand and Jesus precious and powerful that made it soft. Father God I repent of any judgemental attitude toward I have others, Father God I always sinned, in words, thoughts and in actions, deliver me from fighting back to others when I am being treated unfairly, knowing vengeance is yours , help me know and make me remember that it isn’t the flesh and blood but against the spiritual darkness of this world. This study reaches out to me because I have an extremely hard time not only forgiving myself, but forgiving others. Ironically before this study started or was thought about, I had forgiving someone from my past and it has some set me free. I know I have a long way to go.

Chastity, I think we are harder on ourselves than we are on others. It has been a real relief for me when I have realized in the past that I have truly forgiven others. So often we are the only ones hurting as others go on with life and don’t even realize the hurt and anger we are harboring. Greetings in the name Jesus! Heaven is my home but I currently residing in Oregon. This is my first Bible study with LGG and I am taking with my daughter who resides in Virginia and was the one who introduced me to LGG. We are coming into study one week behind because of personal busyness- my biggest of sins – allowing the Lord not to be first in my life. I am truly trying to change in my life and it is number one of my goals for this study!!
I am starting this study a week behind, thought about trying to catch up, but realized that I need to take this day by day like it is lined out so I can truly absorb and learn from this study. I am excited about this and once I finish I may get the study guide for children to usw with my youth; but for now God is telling me that I need this for myself.
Blessings in Jesus’ name. I didn’t even realize there was a name of the study of sin. I know God is working in my heart and I look forward to all he has planned for my life through this study time. Thank you for sharing God’s Word!

I’m not sure if I can leave a comment, as you are on to the next study. I just found this and it resonates with me so. I’ve done so many awful things, I can’t imagine God EVER forgiving me. I hang onto it like a cold woolen robe. I don’t do such anymore, but I know what I’ve done and I know what I am. I can’t escape that. So I’m going to read your daily studies and follow the challenges and see where I end up. Thank you for this.

I just started this study to day. Funny, someone spoke these words over me in prayer in church. You are forgiven. And even though I have walked with the Lord for many years I am still learning and understanding and really grasping who I am in Christ. When I saw this study I knew I had to do it
Forgiveness wishing myself is hard. There’s still some things that I feel are unforgivable but I know God is almighty and I hope to gain that knowledge and heart for Gods grace and forgiveness
Just started this study today. My sophomore year of high school I was so close to God but the sins that came into my life prevented me from seeing the light. I am so thankful that I am able to “re-hatch” I am so thankful for God and look forward to looking into God’s forgiveness and his sacrifice.
