In a time when women received almost no recognition for their contributions to the Christian faith, Hildegard of Bingen made a significant impact on the church. She lived in Germany from 1098 to 1180. Hildegard had many health problems. Her parents isolated her, sending her to live in a small room with her aunt Jutta of Spanheim. Soon after, many other women joined Hildegard and Jutta, creating a convent in Germany.

Hildegard continued to learn more about her Christian faith and followed in her aunt’s footsteps, eventually leading the convent after her aunt passed away. Hildegard was a wise leader, growing the convent and training many women in service to God.

Hildegard was also an influential leader in the medieval church. She gained notoriety through her many writings, letters, and books, even hymns and music. Hildegard’s work helped many grow in their walk with the Lord. She traveled on several teaching tours. Hildegard was widely respected and admired by both men and women in the church.

Even when it was time to retire, Hildegard kept working to advance the gospel, continuing to write and teach. She believed the work was never completed and worked steadfastly despite her limitations. She lived to age eighty-two, faithfully serving the Lord and the church. Hildegard is a great encouragement to us, reminding us our work for the gospel is never finished. No matter our beginnings or our perceived shortcomings, God can and will use us in incredible ways to advance His name.
