The plight of the underdog is easily found in books, movies, and our everyday lives. Maybe you have felt like the underdog before or you have known someone else who feels worn out, overpowered, tired, small, useless, or alone. Then life brings you a pivotal moment to remind you who you are – a David and Goliath moment. How do you muster up courage when you need it, if that courage isn’t in you?

In 1 Samuel 17, all the Israelites were terrified of a warrior named Goliath. “He had a bronze helmet on his head and was wearing scale body armor. The weight of his bronze body armor was 5,000 shekels. He had bronze shin guards on his legs, and a bronze javelin was slung over his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and the iron point of his spear weighed 600 shekels. His shield bearer was walking before him.”

David had almost nothing. He wore no armor and had no attendants, wielded no javelin or shin guards, and carried no weighty reputation. Even his own family did not believe in him. David looked like no match for Goliath, but Goliath was no match for God.

Are you going through something like this right now? Do you sense you need to make a stand for something in your life but feel alone and afraid? Does it feel like everyone is against you? I have been there, my friend. When it hurts to think everyone is against me, all I need to do is remember the One who is for me.

Before David stepped in front of the Israelites to approach Goliath, he knew he belonged to the Lord. “The Lord who delivered me from the lion and the bear will also deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37)

You may feel like an underdog, a failure, or a lost cause to others, but God is the One who created you and the only One who can speak to who you really are.

You are not an underdog if you are living under God. Be like David who worked and practiced faithfully in the hidden places to one day make God known in your public, pivotal moments.

In his pivotal moment, David pushed through the insults and past the accusations to stand alone and face Goliath, “You are coming against me with swordand spear and javelin. But I am coming against you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel’s armies, whom you have defied!” (1 Samuel 17:45) Then with courage rooted in God and a single, smooth stone, he defeated a beastly man of bronze.

When you feel the nudging to move toward holiness in your life, know the Holy One is the one doing the nudging. He wants to prepare you in the quiet moments so you know how to stand in the louder ones too.

“Be strong and courageous! Do not fear ortremble before them, for the Lord your God is the one who is going with you. He will not fail you or abandon you!” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

God is always with you and always wants you moving closer to Him! You are gaining courage and wisdom by reading God’s Word and letting it change who you are from the inside out. Dear friends, do not stop! Keep going! Keep asking God to fill you up with His strength and His power so when you find yourself in the moment when you must face your fears, you have settled your worth in Him way before the battlefield. You are not alone. And then, you will realize the victory that comes from rejecting life lived in fear as the underdog and claim the freedom from living as more than a conqueror under God.
