In the book of Malachi, we see God speak His last words and then keep silent for four-hundred years. God’s chosen and beloved people were deprived of any words from the Lord for four centuries.
Even though God’s silence was incredibly difficult for people who had been accustomed to hearing from God on a consistent basis, God had a purpose for His silence. The Jews endured the silence of God, questioning His kindness and whether or not He still cared for them while also clinging to Malachi’s final words of hope.
I have faced many seasons of God’s silence in my own life. These seasons have been painful, confusing, hopeless, and dark. Even in these seasons, I’ve clung to the promises of God that display His kindness and His faithfulness. I’ve learned to trust Him, even in His silence.
In my home country of Italy, I see a people, who, like the Jews, had long ago rejected God and turned their worship into ritual. I am confident that God will do incredible things in my country that will advance His kingdom. But, today, God seems silent. I have seen Him do mighty works in my own life and heart when He seems silent, so I choose to believe that He is doing the same for my people.
We can be very discouraged by the silence of God, but we don’t have to lose hope. We can remind God that we want to hear His voice while simultaneously trusting Him during His silence. The sun will rise again, God will send a messenger, and the world will see the Light!
