Have you ever felt that your life was simply imploding in on you? Whether we want to admit it or not, we cannot control everything and everyone in our lives. So, what do we do when the world turns upside down? Today, we will see how Micah responds after Israel refuses to listen to his message.
In this section of Micah, we see a more intimate look at the prophet. He has issued oracles to Israel and now he pauses for a personal lament. In these seven verses, we see how the nation’s sin and refusal to turn to righteousness has inflicted Micah.
The prophet begins with a heart-wrenching cry, illustrating his personal grief as well as his remorse for the ill that will fall to the people. Micah likens his situation to that of a farmer who has tended a vineyard yet reaps none of the fruit. While he toiled to bring the people to repentance, his labor was in vain. Micah then announces that there are no faithful followers left in the land.
In verse 3, Micah begins to lament over the various sins of the nation. They have turned from all moral standards in leadership. Loyalties between friends have deteriorated. Even the familial bond is broken. It seems that the very fabric that holds the nation together is being ripped apart in front of Micah.
Yet, Micah watches in hope. He watches and waits for the Lord. Even while everything around him falls apart, He waits for God His Savior. He waits because he knows his God will hear him.
Sometimes, friend, it may seem that you have worked so hard, only to have no one hear you. You may feel that no one understands. But the Lord hears you and understands your situation. He is working in and through it all. In the middle of the trial, our call as believers is to stay faithful, watch in hope, and wait, knowing God our Savior will hear us.
In what area are you currently struggling to maintain faithfulness in the waiting? How can reflecting on the character of God as Savior help give you hope?
