For a long time, my husband’s heart was set on Canada. Together we had mapped out the coordinates of our future, packed our dreams into boxes labeled for the Northern Hemisphere, and we did all we could to see this dream come to pass. But when we reached for this path, it was locked. Have you ever felt that specific ache? The exhaustion of pursuing a dream that seems to keep you at arm’s length?
We didn’t realize it then, but the “closed window” of Canada was actually the protection of a loving Father. While we were striving for one continent, God was whispering the name of another: Australia.
The transition from our plan to His plan wasn’t easy. On paper, we were the definition of “ineligible.” When we finally turned our eyes toward Australia, the experts didn’t offer hope. They offered reality checks. Our migration agent was blunt: “Don’t even think about Australia. You don’t qualify.”
It is a vulnerable place to be when the world tells you “No,” and your resume says “Impossible.” But it is precisely in that gap that we know the God we serve! For in Him all things were created. If He created the continents, the laws, and the hearts of men, is He not capable of moving them? We had to stop being the architects of our destiny and start trusting the One in whom all things hold together.
In February 2014, my husband, Evans, took a step of faith through an unlikely “vehicle”—an ad on Gumtree and applied for a chef job that had been advertised. To the world, it was just a website. To God, it was a divine appointment.
What happened next can only be described as expedited favor. Within no time, an agent in Australia reached out, and a connection was made. By March, an employer was interested. By April, we were completing medicals. By May, the visas that we were “unqualified” for were released. Three months. That is all it took for God to do what we couldn’t achieve in years of striving. When the Creator of “all things visible and invisible” speaks, even the most rigid immigration systems must align with His will.
Like Joseph in Genesis, we found ourselves in a distant land, sent ahead for a purpose we are still uncovering every day. We realized quickly that we weren’t just in Australia to build a life; we were sent as Ambassadors of His Splendor.
In the quiet moments of testing—and there have been many—He reminds us of our pilgrimage. We are kingdom representatives. We are here because all things were created through Him and for Him, including our move to this nation. Whether we are talking to a stranger or navigating our careers, we are called to let His light spill out of our lives.
Sister, perhaps you are staring at a closed window today. Take heart. Our lives are not a series of random events; they are His story. We pledge our allegiance to Him alone, trusting that the same hand that holds the universe together is the same hand holding yours.
We are but pens of a ready writer.
