There are some things in life we will never fully know unless we devote ourselves to understanding.

I grew up in a Christian home, attended church, youth group, bible studies, and private Christian schools. I am eternally grateful to have had the gospel presented to me and part of my life at a young age. However, I’ve come to realize there’s a big difference between head knowledge and heart knowledge.

Head knowledge provides the framework for understanding, but heart knowledge is the marked moment of radical surrender that provides the application of understanding.

This past Fall, I intentionally sought out a mentor for the first time in my life. I had heard of people having mentors or part of a discipleship program, but I had never experienced one for myself. This isn’t a business or goal based mentorship but a biblical one. This was a step of faith for me time wise as well as financially.

As moms, we tend to invest in our kids over ourselves. So it didn’t surprise me to find myself conflicted on whether or not I should invest in this mentorship course. The reality is that our faithfulness will produce fruit and create an eternal impact. This was the anchor to my “yes.”

It was clear that the Lord was calling me to this, and I am so grateful that I stepped into where He was leading me for such a time as this.

Devoting Ourselves to Truth

“Practicing the truth in love.” I’m not sure what thoughts or ideas come to mind when you hear this phrase. For me it always equated to being “nice.” Friends, it’s much deeper than that.

The context of this verse is very important. Ephesians 4:14 warns us from remaining as children, tossed back and forth by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching. Verse 15 contrasts this by telling us to hold onto the truth. In order to hold onto truth, we must know what this truth is.

Devoting Ourselves to God’s Word

In my pursuit of grabbing hold of truth, I have not only invested in a spiritual mentor, but I have committed to being in the Word every single day. Podcasts and devotionals are great supplements, but I can easily allow these resources to replace my time in the Word. Podcasts and devotionals can feed us, but Scripture forms us. We can prioritize both, but we should not confuse the two.

I read the Bible every morning before my feet hit the ground. Yes, even before coffee! The YouVersion Bible app shows that I have a 132 day streak as I am writing this post. I don’t share this to brag (although I am very proud of this passion) but to spur you on. I have never felt so rooted in the gospel as I am today.

The Word of God changes us. It changes our thoughts. It changes how and what we speak. It changes our heart, our perspective, our lives. I’ve heard this my entire life, but it is true! And no one can do it for you. Watering the seeds of our faith is crucial for root development.

Devoting Ourselves to Love

What I have come to know first hand is how important it is to be surrounded by those who tell the truth. To be surrounded by people who love me enough to speak truth to me. And oftentimes, it’s not being in agreement with me. I have grown so much by having someone in my life that is committed to seeing me grow into greater maturity in Christ. What a gift this has been!

Love prioritizes others. If we see sin, error, or potential danger, love demands that we speak truth. A quote I recently came across summarizes this thought beautifully. “True love will always speak at the right time, with the right words, in the right spirit, and using the right approach.”

We will be equipped with the right words, the right spirit, and the right approach as we plant ourselves in God’s Word.

May we be women who speak truth and are known for our love.

Devote yourselves to understanding. Dig deep, sweet friends!
