Nothing God does is done in a vacuum and without purpose. Nothing! Everything He does has a plan, purpose, and intent. Even though we know that God is completely in control, it is also ok to ask, “Father, what are you doing?”
Hope Against All Odds
The world was in darkness, and the hearts of men were turned to evil. From the beginning, God has promised to send someone who would save mankind and restore them to the place of kingship and priesthood before God. Years and years went on, and some people gave up hope of the salvation of Israel. I am sure some also mocked those who still had hope while others forgot the God of Israel and turned to other gods.
But there was a minority who held on to hope against all odds, believed, and waited. Even when their mortal bodies gave way, they had diligently taught that faith and hope to their children and the children after them.
The Result of Hope
Simeon was one of these Israelites who held on to hope, and his eyes beheld the Messiah. A lot of times when we are waiting for something to come true, we spend time dreaming about what it will be like and what we will do. I wonder what Simeon had imagined this moment would look like. No matter what dreams or hopes he held, there is only one thing we can do when we stand in the presence of our Savior. We respond with humility, awe of God, and praise for His covenant-keeping character.
There’s no telling how many times Simon taught about the salvation of Israel. There may have even been moments he doubted things were going to change, especially when their oppressors came down hard on him. But I can guarantee you that the moment He saw the tiny face of His Savior made all the waiting worth it.
Persevering in Hope
I do not know where you are right now or what your current situation is. I do not know how long you have been waiting for something from God: a child, a job, a spouse, the salvation of your family members or friends, healing, a change in your finances, or a promotion. What I do know is that God is trustworthy. He always comes through, so keep hoping, trusting, and believing that what God has said to you and promised you will come to pass.
Christmas is evidence that God answers prayer and keeps His Word. If Jesus came, then there is nothing that He will not do for us in accordance with His Word and promises. If He says it, He will do it. Like Simeon, hold on to hope until you see the object of your salvation: Jesus Christ.
I pray hope comes alive in your heart and that His truth will continually be your guiding light. Amen.
