I have always been the peacemaker in relationships. In high school, I would try to mediate between my parents and siblings if they were in an argument. In college, friends would come to me for wisdom and counsel when they were going through a difficult situation. But if I’m being honest, I often relied on my own wisdom instead of God’s wisdom.
Last year, I had the opportunity to go through a recovery program at my church. I discovered that a few of my core sin struggles are pride, control, and fear. In my pride, I can be quick to rely on my own understanding of a situation rather than turning to God for help. God has opened my eyes to see that His ways are much better than my own.
Do Not Rely on Your Own Understanding
During the process of repenting of my pride, I memorized Proverbs 3:5-4. The truths of these verses led me to believe that it is possible to trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. And in acknowledging your plans before Him, He will give you direction.
Shortly after the recovery program ended, I found myself back in a season of struggling with fear and insecurity. I started a new job and felt lost and inadequate. It was the first time after the recovery program I had to “practice what I preached.” Was I going to believe what Proverbs 3 says, or was I going to shrink back in fear and let my insecurities overtake me?
Acknowledge Him in All Your Ways
Thankfully, I had a great mentor in my life who reminded me that God’s love is the source of freedom. God’s love is foundational to everything else we believe.
Prior to verses five and six, Proverbs 3:3 states, “Do not let mercy and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” God is reminding us to cling to His steadfast love and faithfulness. Only in remembering God’s character are we able to know how deeply loved we are and offer that same love to others.
After my mentor reminded me of God’s love, I started to see myself differently. In God’s kindness, He comforted me and strengthened my trust in Him. I sit here today, only a few months later, and am in a completely different spot. Circumstances are still hard all around me, but I am able to stand firm on God’s truth.
He Will Make Your Paths Straight
His steadfast love and faithfulness have never failed me. He has given me wisdom when I’ve asked for it. When I acknowledge His ways, He has made my path straight.
Where are you lacking trust in God today? Are you struggling with carrying burdens and need God’s help? How are you relying on your own wisdom instead of God’s wisdom? I’ll be the first to raise my hand and say that these are questions I have to ask myself every day.
There is no shame in admitting to God that we need His help. He created us as dependent beings so that we fully rely on Him as our Father when we’re lost, weak, or tired. He alone is exactly what we need in times of trouble.
How sweet it is that our Father loves us so much that He would give us wisdom when we ask for it. You are not alone, friend! God is ready and waiting for you to come to Him today.
