God is in the business of rescuing and redeeming. After Joseph’s rule as second in command over Egypt, a new Pharaoh took control, and he soon forgot about Joseph. Though God had promised Abraham that his family would be as numerous as the sands on the shore and would dwell safely in the land of Canaan, the Israelites found themselves to be numerous, but they were also slaves of the new Pharaoh.
The people cried out to God to deliver them, so God raised up a man named Moses. Moses’ beginning was as unique as his calling.
From a baby in a basket escaping the edict of death to a people on the run from the rule of Pharaoh, God was at work to rescue His own. The Book of Exodus tells the story of God’s work in the life of Moses and how he led the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt toward the Promised Land.
As God’s chosen people, the Israelites entered into a covenant with God where they would live according to His ways to demonstrate to others what holy living looks like. Though the people could not hold up their end of the covenant, God’s grace abounded. He continued to provide, protect, and guide the nation of Israel as He dwelled in their midst.
Over and over again, God demonstrated that He is greater than all else and the One whom we should worship. He is faithful to keep His promises. And following Him leads to a life and flourishing.
Life today may feel far removed from the miracles that we read of in Exodus. But God is the same today as He was then. He is still at work to rescue a broken humanity and redeem and restore them to a relationship with Him.
Exodus displays God’s power to rescue, but it also points to the greater rescue to come. Today we can live free in the freedom and grace of Jesus Christ, our True Deliverer.
