Let me first say, I know this is hard. “Living in community” sounds like it should be so easy, and some people do make it look effortless. But let me be upfront before we begin this four-week journey into cultivating community in our lives. This is not easy. Yes, we were indeed made for it. It is part of God’s plan, and when we don’t have a biblical community in our lives, we will miss out on some special blessings. But don’t feel down or get discouraged if this is something you have struggled with. Realize, instead, that you are in good company.

As we get started, we first need to understand what is, and what is not, biblical community.

Biblical community is a group of like-minded Christians devoted to learning and living out God’s Word in their lives. It is more than a social club or group of friends with similar interests gathering together. Cultivating a biblical community in your life means going beyond surface conversations to intentional time spent together encouraging and building each other up in God’s Word. The motive behind the fellowship is love for God, love for each other, and a desire to help each other live in obedience and honor to God.

Cultivating a biblical community will take a combination of time and prayer. Don’t get discouraged if you reach out to several people and meet rejection, silence, or non-commitment. (Been there, done that. Did I mention this isn’t always easy?) Also, the quality of the relationships is more important than the quantity of people who show up. Commit this process to God by asking Him to bless your relationships. Pray that He will guide you to the right people, and then be brave and invite others into your life. Pray, reach out, invite, and then trust God.

Let’s devote these next four weeks to praying for God-honoring, biblical community in our lives. Remember, we all long to be known and loved. We were not made to be alone; we were created for community!
