We have all experienced a season of waiting. Whether we’re in one currently or we’ve experienced one in the past, we know there will be more seasons of waiting to come. While we wait and anticipate things on this earth, we also know that we are waiting for something more. We are ultimately waiting for Jesus Christ, our Savior and eternal King, to return and fully restore His people and establish His kingdom on earth.

Advent is a season of remembering and waiting. We wait for Christ’s return, remembering the promises He has already fulfilled. God promised to send a Messiah to save the world from sin and death. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, lived a perfect life, died a sacrificial death, and was raised again to life. In His first coming, He redeemed the world from sin. When He returns, He will fully restore His people and establish His kingdom on earth.

Advent is a season of acknowledging the brokenness we face in our world every day. We take time to remember and recognize the way the world is, not how it should be, and we wait expectantly for Christ to come and restore peace. In His first coming, Jesus restored our relationship with God, which had been broken by sin. When He returns, He will restore the world from pain and suffering, once and for all.

Advent is a season of expressing joy. We can find joy as we wait and remember because we know Whom we are waiting for. We joyfully wait for the return of Christ, believing the restoration and redemption He brings will be complete. As we praise God for the first coming of Christ and His saving work, we find joy. As we wait for His return, we discover the joy in knowing that all our longings will ultimately be fulfilled in Him.

Advent is a season of reflection and pondering. As Mary experienced the birth of John the Baptist and her pregnancy with Jesus, she humbled herself and pondered all that was happening. She prepared for the arrival of Christ, of the Messiah, in quiet readiness. His first coming began as a baby and led to sacrifice and death. His second coming will begin with a trumpet blast and will never end!

We prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Christ during the season of Advent. As we fight against the demands and pressures of the world, may we reflect and praise God for the incredible gift of His Son. Christmas is a celebration of His birth and His life, death, and resurrection. During Advent, we wait. We prepare; we remember. We acknowledge our brokenness and express our joy. Let’s study God’s Word together as we wait, not only for Christmas but for His return!
