This week my six-year-old asked me: “How big do you think the computer was that helped God make people?”

It was an innocent question and a sweet teaching moment, but it made the contrast of these verses and the norm of our daily life so obvious.

The Lᴏʀᴅ God formed the man from the soil of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” —Genesis 2:7

God didn’t use Amazon Prime to get you here quickly. He didn’t let a computer randomly assign your attributes. And He didn’t delegate the work.

You are exactly who you are because that’s how God designed you. Because that’s how God made you.

The work of our hands is intimate. Think of how you delight in a handwritten letter, how you treasure homemade gifts, and how you appreciate a homemade meal. Think of the many ways you hold your children, touch your husband, hug your friends, all different but all expressing your care and devotion.

The work of our hands is intimate. But the work of God’s hands is divine.

God’s hands created each of us. He purposely, perfectly makes each person.

It’s hard for me to get my mind around the enormity of that job. After all, there are a lot of people who have and who will walk the earth. Each person is a new masterpiece. Every detail is intentional.

It’s also humbling and inspiring to me that God chose to give humans an important, elevated position in His world.

“Of what importance is the human race, that you should notice them? Of what importance is mankind, that you should pay attention to them? You made them a little less than the heavenly beings. You crowned mankind with honor and majesty. You appoint them to rule over your creation; You have placed everything under their authority” —Psalm 8:4-6

Let today’s verses linger with you. In a time where so many people feel unloved or unseen, let’s live and share the truth. God individually crafted each of us. “We are the clay, and you [God] are our potter; we are all the product of your labor” (Isaiah 64:8). God got His hands dirty for you. He was patient. He was gentle, but He knew when pressure was needed. He knew and still knows how much fire will bring refinement.

We are each made in His image. May we see His grace and trust His design when we look at ourselves, and may the world see glimpses of God in us.
