Identity is defined as who or what a person or thing is. It is easy to define our identity by our family, our career, our friends, our hobbies, or our nationality. We often determine our identity by our actions, our words, or our reputation (both perceived and real). We create an identity both consciously and subconsciously. We all have a distinct identity, but it can be hard to pinpoint how our identity was formed or how we’ve come to define ourselves the way we do. It can be hard to know if our identity is true, or if we have given ourselves a false identity.
Without knowing our true identity, we cannot live in the way we were designed to live. In Christ, we have a secure, unchanging identity. He has marked our lives by His life, death, and resurrection. His work on the cross has changed us, marking us as His own.
The sacrifice of Christ allows us to be made new. He has paid the penalty for our sins, allowing us to live without guilt or shame. He has covered our sin, making us a new creation. We are forgiven in Him, made righteous by His sacrifice. We are delivered from our former life, sealed as His for eternity.
Though it is often what we most struggle to believe, our identity in Christ remains fixed. He has chosen us. He has redeemed us. And He will never leave us. If we have placed our faith in Christ, we are forever secure in Him.
As you study your identity in Christ, ask God to continually reveal His love for you. Ask Him to uncover areas of your life where it is hard for you to believe His truth. God longs for you to know who you are in Him. Let’s, together, search His Word for the truth of who we are in Jesus.
