I remember my mom once telling me a story about something her father was known to say: “There’s more where that came from.”
Her father had a very generous and compassionate heart. Even though their family did not have much in the way of wealth, they lived with open and generous hearts, ready to help others and looking to be a blessing to those who had a need. And that was especially true of her father’s heart toward his children.
My mom recounted the times when she had a need or a question, she knew she could always approach her father to ask for his help. Sometimes, she needed his advice when she was facing a hard season. Other times, she needed his calm and reassuring words to calm her nerves before a piano recital. If she needed new shoes, or school supplies, or lunch money, she knew she could go to her father and ask, and he would help her get what she needed.
There were even times he would surprise her by handing her a few dollar bills so she could enjoy a special treat. At first, she would feel a little guilty, thinking she hadn’t earned it or maybe it was too much to accept, but her father would reply with a smile in his eye, “Oh, there’s more where that came from.” It was a promise to her that he was able to not only take care of her basic needs, but also to go above and beyond, simply because he delighted in her, and it didn’t come with a limit or end.
I love that thought because it certainly echoes the heart of our Heavenly Father, doesn’t it?
We have a Heavenly Father who cares so greatly about us. He wants us to know we can come to Him about anything. The big and the small. The seemingly tiny little things that may not be a big deal to others, but are important to us. That’s what prayer is—it’s talking directly to God, speaking to Him, and listening to what He has to say.
God wants us to know we can come to Him with every request and come with the confidence that He will never tire of hearing our voice in prayer. He wants us to come to Him, not just as an afterthought, but as our first source. We are never a burden to Him. And He doesn’t just listen—He responds. With love, mercy, grace, and more than we could even begin to understand.
John 1:16 reminds us that He is a God who extends “one gracious gift after another” out of the fullness of who He is. He is limitless in love, limitless in grace, limitless in His ability to do everything He says He can do.
It’s as though He says to us, “Daughter, there’s more where that came from.”
He doesn’t want to meet only the basic, barely-getting-by needs. He is a loving, good Father. There is no limit to His power and might and ability. He wants us to learn that our prayers do not go unheard or unacknowledged. But when we pray, when we believe Him according to His Word, we will find that He is our Source. He is our Provider. He gives us wisdom and direction. He gives us His perfect peace. He is the One who is able, the One who is more than enough, and the One who can do far beyond all we could ask or think.
I hope we can remember that we have a Father who is so good, so kind, and so mighty. Don’t hold back in asking Him for what you need. He is ready to extend to all of us, out of His fullness, one gracious gift after another, “far beyond all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20).
With God, there’s always more where that came from.
