“For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” – Psalm 1:6
For me, this first Psalm is such a simple but profound summary of much of the Gospel. It points us towards pursuing Christ and walking in righteousness. I am a visual person, and this verse creates a lot of images in my mind.
- Sometimes I picture walking on a path that comes to a fork in the road, and I have to choose the next direction.
- Sometimes there’s a sign. Often it doesn’t seem as clear.
- Sometimes we can see ahead in the distance, but sometimes the view is limited or obstructed.
- There are beautiful, peaceful paths. There are also overgrown, treacherous places.
- Familiar journeys. Unknown roads.
And, that’s life, isn’t it? God knows and sees the details of every moment of our walk – through this life and with Him – even when the details aren’t obvious to us.
He watches us. He’s with us. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105
We’re not going to walk the path of righteousness perfectly. We are incapable of being righteous, but through Jesus, grace abounds. The question becomes, are we doing things for God’s approval or for the world’s applause? The first has eternal value, but the world and its wickedness will eventually perish.
And the good news, since we’re bound to wander and stray, is that it’s never too late to turn around, to find a different path, to ask for directions. God honors a repentant heart and He welcomes a wayward soul.
Your response to Christ will make all the difference. The first step is asking Christ to be your personal Savior. The next step is striving to walk in God’s will and grow in our spiritual maturity.
As the American poet, Robert Frost, wrote, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”
Grace and peace,

Taken out of context, this passage could evoke fear in me. I have been adrift for so many months that I feel anything but righteous. But in the context of His Word and all of His promises, I stand in faith that I have nothing to fear. He promised –vowed– to never leave or forsake me (Hos 2:19, Deu 31:6). He promised to take me by the right hand and help me (Is 41:13). Truly following Him means I must take Him at His Word and trust that His promises are true.
