Years ago, I got a text message from one of the pastors at our church asking us to pray for his close friend.  All we knew was that the man and his wife were at the hospital.  I remember that my husband and I stood in our kitchen and clasped our hands together to intercede for this family. We asked God to heal our brother in Christ and to comfort his wife while she waited.

My heart sank a day later when I received word that our pastor’s friend had passed away. His wife was now a young widow with three little girls at home. I sat on the edge of my bed looking at my phone and couldn’t believe this news. Overwhelmed by emotion, I cried out to God, “Why?”

In one day, this woman’s entire life had changed. But as I prayed in anguish for her, God reminded me of an important truth: Our circumstances may change, but our God remains the same. I could trust that the constant presence of our faithful Father would protect this grieving woman.

I knew this woman was a strong believer in Christ. Because her hope was set on Jesus, her steadfast faith would keep her safe. Even when the world around us gives way, our faith provides a solid foundation to help us stay standing.

Having readjusted my thinking, I wiped the tears away and rested in confident assurance. My circumstances may be out of my control, but I can trust God will never forsake me. The Father of all mercy and comfort will provide everything I need to move forward in faith.

God filled me with an unexplainable peace that day that superseded the anxiety I felt. I learned a great lesson that has served me well on other hard days. If I fix my heart and mind on God’s faithfulness, His peace will guard me and give me the strength I need.

When our circumstances make no sense, we can look to the cross and remember all Jesus suffered. His suffering served a purpose, and God has promised we never suffer in vain.

That young widow eventually started a new small group for single parents at our church. God comforted her in all her troubles, and she turned around and poured her broken heart into encouraging other grieving people. God’s love filled her up and overflowed to bring healing and help to the hurting.

Are you in the middle of a messy situation? Friend, maintain your faith. Press in to Jesus and ask Him to help you persevere. You can trust your Savior will safeguard your life and keep you from falling apart. One day you will look back and see how He comforted you and increased your capacity to love His people.

You stand completely safe in the arms of a loving God. He will bring healing as we trust Him moment by moment. God will always exceed your expectations in the end if you surrender all to Him.
