Growing up, my parents had a few phrases they would repeat. One that my mom used frequently was, “There’s never a reason to be unkind.” As a teenager, I found this repeated refrain to be annoying, but I knew the value in it (even if I didn’t want to say so). My parents repeated these sayings because they wanted them to stick. They thought these words were so important that they didn’t want me to forget.

More than reminders to be kind or to use my manners when speaking with others, the words of the gospel are the most important words to remember. Throughout our days and our lives, we need to be reminded of the truth of the salvation found in Jesus Christ. It is the gospel that gives us life, hope, and freedom.

Truth of the Gospel

If you’re wondering what the gospel is and why it matters, I’d love to share it with you. In the beginning God created man and woman in His image. They lived in perfect harmony with God. One day, the serpent tempted Eve to partake of the one tree that was off limits in the Garden of Eden. It was in this moment that Eve began to question God’s goodness and sought to be the one in charge of her life. Both she and her husband Adam disobeyed God’s command. This action brought sin into the world, and it has been a problem for every human ever since. Sin is anything we think, say, or do that does not please or honor God.

We are all sinners. The punishment we deserve is death and separation from God. There is nothing that we can do to make up for our sin. But God, who is rich in mercy and love, created a way for us to be forgiven and restored to a right relationship with Him. God sent His very Son, Jesus Christ, to take on the punishment we deserve for our sin.

Jesus lived the life we couldn’t, one of sinlessness and perfect obedience. He was wrongfully accused and was sentenced to crucifixion on a Roman cross. He died and was buried. Three days later, He victoriously rose from the grave. As the perfect Son of God, His death, burial, and resurrection defeated sin and death and is sufficient to cover all sins for people past, present, and future.

Jesus tells us that if we confess with our mouths that He is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead then we will be saved (Romans 10:9-10). Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. When we place our faith in Jesus, we are immediately forgiven of our sins. We cross over from death to life and are filled with the Holy Spirit to live in a way that is pleasing and honoring to Christ. If trusting in Christ for your salvation is something you have never done, we would love to talk with you. Email [email protected].

The gospel changes everything.

Gospel-Centered Home

Creating a gospel-centered home is one where truth is proclaimed, grace is repeatedly offered, and Jesus is the center and hero of it all. When your child is struggling to remember his or her worth, the truth that Jesus has chosen him or her is the most important words to hear. When your child breaks the rules for the tenth time today, reminding him or her that God gives us boundaries so that we can flourish is bringing them back to the gospel.

In all areas of life, we can ask the question, “What does the gospel have to say about that?” It is by grace that we have been saved, and it by grace through faith that we can live. How has the gospel changed your life? How can it begin to change your home?
