I know all of us have had days, weeks, and months of hardship. I am talking about days when it is hard to focus on a task because of worry, and nights that rob us of sleep. Sometimes these hard times seem to drag on and on. After some weeks we feel emotionally worn out, like we can’t possibly handle one more thing.
We read about such a time in the life of our Psalmist in verses 81-88. Spurgeon calls this section the midnight of the Psalm. It is dark and bleak, and yet “stars shine out.”
This poor Psalmist is in a bad way. There are people after him who want to ruin him (vs. 61), others mock him (vs. 51), and they are speaking lies about him (vs. 69). He even feels like his physical life is very much in danger (vs. 87).
We all have a breaking point and the Psalmist feels that he is reaching his. He comes to a point in his trials and sufferings where he is not sure he can handle one more thing (vs.83).
“For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke…”
When wineskins were left in a smoky area, they turned dark with soot and became dry and wrinkled. This is how the Psalmist felt. He was worn out, lined with worry, marked with sadness, frustration, and probably fear.
But as Spurgeon said, this dark and bleak time also had stars. His faith continued on. He continued to cling with all his might to the word of God, knowing that at some point night would turn to day.
This is what trials should to do us. They should push us more deeply into God’s word and therefore more tightly into the arms of God. The hardest days can’t tear true believers away from their God.
Verse 89 begins the dawning of a new day and renewed hope for the author:
“Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.”
When the Psalmist is thrown around by all of his troubles, he makes sure to find his footing on the solid rock of God’s word. It is unmovable, secure and steady. This must be our footing as well. When we stand on this rock, we will find strength to fight temptation and bear affliction, power to obey, and resolve to stand firm.
How is it possible for God’s word to do all of this for us? This word is the same word which spoke everything into existence (vs.91) and which sustains the earth today (Heb 1:3). And not just the earth, but us as well. This word is filled with power because it took on flesh and became a man (John 1).
The reason we can live through the toughest days is because we have been given new life through Christ and the Spirit has taken up residence in our hearts. We do not fight alone. We do not walk through hard days alone. We do not cry alone.
Can you imagine what it would be like if we did not have God’s word? We would not know true wisdom, we would not have a place to find real comfort or joy, we would not know God, and we would not have salvation.
God’s word truly is a treasure that is more valuable than the most outrageous amount of earthly riches (vs. 72). I pray that, like the Psalmist, God’s word would also become our most prized possession… something we could never live without.
Looking To Jesus,

I see such contrast in this week’s verses between the suffering in this life and God’s eternal nature and faithfulness as the created worships the Creator! Thank You, Lord, for something unchanging and firm to grab hold of in the storms of life! What would we do if You had not deigned to reveal Yourself to us?! Finding comfort and new reasons to worship this week in His Word and His world!
Thank you for the testimony of peace granted through God’s Word. I appreciate your sharing as an encouragement to others!

as pits are dug for us these days, may we not “forsake ” His precepts. Revive us, o God, so “we may keep the testimony of Your mouth”. And let that testimony give life to those who are dead.
What a beautiful reminder that we have a place to go to for help.
This has been a week of answered prayer for our wonderful group, especially as we gathered around one sister in prayer as she and her husband attended their first counseling session because of her husband’s infidelity. We not only learn in our group, we support and bear one another’s burdens to the Throne where He asks us to come boldly! For me, this has been a week of affliction, some with my chronic pain, some for my sisters in Christ, and some from a totally unexpected place, a brother in Christ! But then the Spirit reminded me that I should not expect any more than what my Savior received as He endured excruciating pain on the Cross for me, as He bore the burden of my sins, and as He was rejected by not only His own people as a nation, but as He was rejected by those who were closest to Him, even to one who ensnared Him with a kiss! God’s Word always has the answers, the solutions, and the comfort! It is the only defensive “tool” we are given in our “armor of God”! Thank you for these wonderful studies that teach us to effectively use His Word in all situations of life and for His honor and glory! Praise the Lord!
Through my hardest times as a follower of Christ. I have stood on the Rock and he has been faithful. Thank you again for your words of encouragement.
What a wonderful testimony. God’s word does what it says it will do. Always!
Jen,
The more I do the studies the more God’s word is becoming even more precious to me. As I got to the end of your writing I found myself crying, especially when I read that ‘I don’t cry alone’. I am alone here and I so want God’s word to be all I need. I do also need people and sometimes it’s so hard waiting for God to send a friend close by. God has blessed me at many times in my life with wonderful friends and now that I’m 67 I feel that I should be able to survive on my own.
I can’t stop crying – I never cry so maybe God is doing something in me.
thank you for your post.
Oh Denise, I am so sorry for this time of loneliness that you are going through. I prayed for you this morning, that God would send you a friend who loves God word and with whom you can have sweet times of fellowship! It is such an encouragement to hear that you are continuing to be in his word. Don’t ever stop and keep crying out to God. He hears you!
Denise, I so identify with you. I sometimes forget that Gods words have all the answers, and admittedly, at times, his words are not the first thing I turn to for comfort. I will eventually arrive to the conclusion that his word is the answer. I just pray that I will turn to his word FIRST before seeking answers elsewhere. I too am older, soon to be 58, and find that I don’t have the relationship of close friends as I did when I was younger, particularly Christian friends. I would welcome your friendship.
Those tears are the Holy Spirit working in you. Listen to Him and reach out to a trusted woman of Christ and ask her to join you for coffee. Crying alone, we cry out to our God, together we cry and mountains are moved.
thank you so much for this encouraging word. My family and I (not just immediate) have been through a lot this week and needed this so very much.
I will continue to be encourage and be an encouraging spirit for others through Gods word.
thank you,
Debbie,
Praying for your family this morning. May HIs Word comfort and strengthen you as you wait and pray and believe. He is able. Nothing is too hard for Him.
Keep moving forward in faith, sister. God’s got you!

“We do not fight alone. We do not walk through hard days alone. We do not cry alone. ” Oh, how I need to remember these words as I feel very much alone in a daily fight with pain, illness, and depression. More than once I have said I cannot do this anymore only to be reminded that I can because HE does. The fight is hard…exhausting but hopefully not without purpose.
You are so right, the fight can be so exhausting. So glad you are reminding yourself to not fight in your own strength but in the strength of God. Rest in him!!
Thank you Jen for the words you shared today. Thanking God for the Word. Praising Him for Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. The Word who became flesh and dwells among us. The Word brings life and healing, salvation, mercy and grace. He is the way, the truth and the life!
Arlene,
Thank you for this sweet reminder that Jesus is the Word. He is our comforter and our Defender. Where would we be without Him? I am so thankful for the gift of salvation and for the treasure of His Word.
Blessings,

There were two things that really stood out to me this time. The first was that “His word is firmly fixed”. Nothing that happens in this world or to me – no matter how bad and how horrid will ever change that! And two, His faithfulness endures to ALL generations. Which means, He is faithful to me and will be to my children and to my grandchildren! Feeling so encouraged today!!
Leah,
It’s so comforting to know that the same God who was faithful to Abraham and to Peter in the Bible is going to be faithful to us today. That word “ALL” makes me smile.
Blessings,

Thank you Jen, for your beautiful and timely words today. Much needed with so many women hurting.
Thank you, Jen. Beautifully said. <3
How perfect for God to have me in this particular study doing Psalm 119 at a time such as this. Each and every day the scriptures are just what I need to hear as I travel over this challenging mountain. I cling to God’s word, especially His promises, and trust Him. When I am weak and struggling, I can count on my sisters in Christ to be the Aarons and Hurs holding my arms up as I Praise the Lord under all circumstances. I continually remind myself that this too shall pass.
Thank you for being here for all the women who Love God Greatly!
His timing is so perfect. Thankful to have you joining us this study Mary Ann! Praising Him with you!
