On my kitchen counter you will find two large glass jars filled with colorful slips of paper. My husband placed them side by side next to the coffeemaker a while back, and just looking at them makes me smile. Those dollar store containers hold treasure.

Each Sunday during lunch, my husband and I sit on stools at the big counter in the middle of our home, and we grab a pen to write down a few simple words of gratitude. The last seven days of our ordinary lives contain tiny miracles in the making. God is at work bringing redemption in small ways, but we often fail to notice His extraordinary grace until we stop to look back.

Our weekly ritual of counting our blessings never ceases to surprise me. As I put our lunch dishes in the sink, my husband places our new gratitude lists in the jar on the left.  Then, he takes out two notes from last year’s jar to read. It’s amazing how quickly I forget God is in control of every detail of my life, but each memory written on those slips of paper helps me remember.

Our God is faithful. Even on the hardest day, we can look back at our history, see God’s hand of mercy, and find great hope. He lavishes His love on us and shows us great compassion.

Friend, we may forget how God has shown up in our lives, but He never forgets His children. God faithfully remembers us. He actively cares for our needs and takes action on our behalf.

When we stop to reflect on all God has done in our lives, we cannot help but rejoice. Our Abba Father fills our lives with good things. He has chosen us as His very own, and this alone should make us shout for joy.

Every day we have a reason to sing God’s praises:

  • Let’s boast in His holy name. (Psalm 105:3)
  • Give thanks for the strength He provides.  (Psalm 105:4)
  • Proclaim that our just God always keeps His promises.  (Psalm 105:7-11)
  • Tell about His miraculous deeds because His Word is true and always proves right.  (Psalm 105:2, 19)

Just like the Psalmist described in this Psalm, we’ve witnessed God’s miraculous intervention. Our faithful God has set us free, and we are on our way to the promised land. Heaven is our inheritance. Today we can say, “God has led me out of bondage, and I have a reason to rejoice.” Jesus died on the cross to rescue us, and we are no longer enslaved to sin. When we placed our faith in Christ, we moved from death to eternal life.

Because our God is faithful, He sent Jesus to give us a living hope that this broken world cannot take away. Not one of our Father’s promises will ever fail. Our Almighty Protector who has brought us this far will provide everything we need for our tomorrow.

How has God enriched your life since you first put your faith in Christ? Take a few minutes today to look back and make a list of how you’ve seen His faithfulness. Our wonderful God has transformed our lives, and each act of His grace is a joyful memory to treasure.
