The phrase “It was meant for evil but God meant it for good” might be one of the most common phrases used by Christians today. But these were not merely feel-good words uttered in the spur of the moment. Neither was Joseph trying to sound smart and profound. These words were spoken from a history of pain, of triumph, and of the faithfulness of God. Those words were a testimony of the faithfulness of God to keep His word of promise no matter how grim and grave the situation had been. Joseph was saying, “You could have tried everything, but it would still not have worked because God is faithful.”

One of the reasons I love the Bible is the fact that it does not shy away from the difficulties of life. It does not try to color situations to present a good face. No, it is very open and direct about the real state of things.

We see a man destined for great things, of whom great words had already been spoken and reinforced by dreams from God. One would expect a smooth and easy life for such a man. One would never expect he would be betrayed by kin, falsely accused, or thrown into prison. And most times as Christians, we struggle with the knowledge and reality that our lives will sometimes be hard and painful. That fact really doesn’t sit well with us sometimes.

Inasmuch as we want to make this story about us, let us widen our scope to the overall story of the Bible: the faithfulness of God to His words in war, in peace, and in death. Throughout time, His Word has never failed. Still never fails.

That is the truth I want you to hold in your heart as you go through this study and as you go through life. God never fails. He did not fail Joseph; He will not fail you.

The Bible tells us that He watches over His Word to bring it to pass (Jeremiah 1:12). He is eager for the fulfilment of His words. He watched His Word throughout generations until Christ came. Even when it felt like everything was lost, one quiet night, a baby cried in Bethlehem, and the Savior was born. Joseph slept a slave and woke up a ruler of the world power of that time.

I do not know the day that He fulfills His promises to you, but I know the One who can make it happen.

Trust HIM!
