The Law of the Lord is Perfect

The law of the Lord is perfect

and preserves one’s life.

The rules set down by the Lord are reliable

and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.

The Lord’s precepts are fair

and make one joyful.

The Lord’s commands are pure

and give insight for life.

The commands to fear the Lord are right

and endure forever.

The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy

and absolutely just.

Psalm 19:7-9

As we draw near to God, He promises to draw near to us. His Word is perfect, true, reliable, and fair. Let’s continue to seek Him as we begin another week of learning to study the Bible.

Today, we’re going to do more observation. I know it seems tedious to spend so much time on observation. The more time we spend observing the passage, the more accurate our interpretation and application will be. Let’s continue to take our time in this step, learning valuable tools that will help us with effective Bible study.

Today, as you observe Psalm 19:7-9, circle all of the adjectives used to describe God’s Word. Make a list of these words.

Next, underline all of the descriptions of what God’s Word does. Make another list of these words and phrases.

  • What do you notice about these words and phrases?
  • Are the connotations of these words positive or negative?
  • What do these words mean in your current context?

Take a moment to find a definition of every adjective you wrote down that describes God’s Word.

Next, find a definition of each verb that tells us what God’s Word does.

What is consistent between all of these definitions? What is different?

We’re not working through interpretation and application yet, but today, take what you’ve learned about God’s Word and come up with a short description, in your own words, of the qualities and characteristics of God’s Word.

Praise God today for His Word!

  1. It must truly break God’s heart. Don’t you agree? “The law of the Lord is perfect.” “The rules set down by the Lord are reliable and impart wisdom.” “The Lord’s commands are pure and give insight.” And yet, we turn away from them. We have been taught that they have been done away with & don’t mean anything anymore. This passage speaks of what is known as Torah, Genesis thru Deuteronomy. Why even bother reading them, let alone study them, if we don’t believe we should live by them? We have a Father who loves us enough to tell us how to live in a way that pleases Him & promises many blessings for doing so. We have a Savior who plainly said that He did not come to do away with these instructions (Matthew 5:17), who constantly pointed people away from the teachings of men & toward the teachings of His, & our, Father (Genesis thru Deuteronomy). And we are told, believe, & tell others that they have been done away with. Scripture tells us over & over again, from cover to cover, how wonderful His law is, & we choose to dismiss it rather than live by it. How His heart must break.
