For recognition of the Lord’s sovereign majesty will fill the earth just as the waters fill up the sea.
Into the Text
Where are we going with this? The world around us often wonders where we are headed. What is going to happen? As believers, we know the answer. We know that God has a plan, and He has revealed it to us in His Word.
At the end of chapter 1, Habakkuk asks God why He would use the evil Babylonians. Here, in chapter 2, we see that God will use Babylon, but He is also going to bring judgment to the Babylonians for their wicked actions.
This is an interesting truth about God. God is sovereign over all, meaning He can use anything to accomplish His plans even if it is evil people. And yet, even though He uses corrupt people, like the Babylonians, it doesn’t mean that He endorses their ways.
God is not a cosmic puppet master. We are all given free will to choose our actions, but in ways that we don’t understand. God is also over all of those decisions; therefore, He can and will use them. At the end of the day, we will all be held accountable for what we have thought, said and done.
God promised Habakkuk, and subsequently us, that He will one day bring judgment and all will be made new. God always keeps His promises. As we keep reading in Scripture, we know this promise will come through the Rescuer, Jesus Christ. One day, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord of all. His majesty will fill the earth. What a glorious day that will be!
While we longingly wait for that day, we can live with the end in sight. We know who the victor is and where we are going. When the world starts to worry and fret, we can remain sure and steady because we are holding on to the one who is truly sure and steady. It is a hope anchored in the gospel and One that will carry us through to the end.
Prayer
God, thank you that you are in control. Thank you that you know the end of the story. Help me to rest in who you are over the worries of the world. Amen.
