Whatever is True

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things.

Philippians 4:8

Into the Text

We learn from God’s Word that what we think about matters. Our thought life influences all aspects of daily life. If our thoughts are not healthy, over time, the results of those unhealthy thoughts are seen in every area of our lives. That is why we are called to focus on what is true, respectable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy.

Being mindful of what we allow into our minds and actively seeking out positive, uplifting things to think about is how we live lives that glorify God. God, in His love, knew we needed to learn how to guard our minds with His truth. We do this by intentionally putting on our helmet of salvation and making it a habit for life.

It is easy to get caught up in negative thought patterns and worry. I struggle in this way, too. There are days I find myself letting my negative thoughts have a field day in my mind. Left to roam free on their own, my thoughts aren’t naturally positive. I have to intentionally stop my thoughts from going down those depressive alleyways, and instead choose to focus on what is true, respectable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy.

Whenever we become aware of bad or untrue thoughts, we must bring them into submission to the truth, in order for peace and joy to fill our hearts once again. The old saying, “What you think about you bring about,” at times, can be true. When my thoughts are toxic and unhealthy, my actions and emotions expose them. The people close to me eventually see what had been unseen in my mind. That is why learning to guard our thoughts in Christ Jesus is important.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, help me to develop the habit of focusing my thoughts on what is true, respectable, pure, and lovely. This is an inner struggle that has the potential to impact all areas of my life. Help me develop healthy thoughts that bring glory to You and health to my mind and body. Amen.
