My eyes are worn out from weeping; my stomach is in knots. My heart is poured out on the ground due to the destruction of my helpless people; children and infants faint in the town squares.
Into the Text
We can hardly believe the words we read today. It can seem almost impossible to reconcile what is recorded in Lamentations 2 with the God we know who is good, loving, and kind. Our reading today is a sobering account of the consequences of a life of disobedience to the Lord.
Friends, let our study today be a warning of what happens to our souls when we turn away from God. May it be a reminder of what goes on in the spiritual realms when we choose distraction, temptation, and sin, and turn away from the Lord rather than walk obediently and faithfully with Him. Daily repentance is not just a rule to follow but a privilege to practice. The Lord desires and longs for every human to come to know and love Him and experience fullness of joy in His presence (Psalm 16:11).
God is holy and just. To stay true to His nature, it is impossible for any sin to enter His presence. The consequences of sin are destruction and death. But He has provided a way for us to have life. Through faith in Christ, we accept God’s gracious gift of forgiveness.
We pray that we will never see the horrendous scenes described in Lamentations 2, but we need to stay alert, ready to fight the devil and the sin of the flesh, stand firm in our faith, and walk humbly with our God.
You are not alone in this. Stay faithful, walk in obedience, and remember what you know to be true, no matter your circumstances. Repent daily, love God deeply, and stay rooted in His Word.
Prayer
God, help me to stand firm and faithful. When I am tempted to drift away from you or ignore conviction, Holy Spirit, remind me what is true and lead me to repentance. Amen.
