“Do not honor yourself before the king, and do not stand in the place of great men; for it is better for him to say to you, ‘Come up here,’ than to put you lower before a prince, whom your eyes have seen.“
Into the Text
Throughout Scripture, we are reminded to guard our hearts against pride. Over and over, God warns us that those who exalt themselves will be humbled. These verses in Proverbs echo that truth, urging us to be humble in our actions and attitudes. Rather than seeking recognition or honor for ourselves, we are encouraged to wait patiently for God to elevate us in His perfect timing.
Jesus also taught this principle in Luke 14 when He shared a parable about taking the lowest place at a banquet. It is far better to quietly serve where we are than to seek out applause or status. True honor comes not from self-promotion but from living a life that reflects humility and faithfulness. When we trust God to promote us in His time, we find a deeper sense of joy and peace, knowing that our worth isn’t based on the world’s recognition but on God’s love for us.
Esther’s story is a beautiful example of this. She didn’t seek her position of influence, nor did she strive for recognition. Yet God, in His sovereign plan, placed her exactly where she needed to be, using her humility and obedience to save her people. Like Esther, we are called to trust God’s timing and to honor Him where He has placed us.
Sweet friend, if you’re feeling overlooked or longing for recognition, remember that God sees you. He delights in your quiet faithfulness. Trust Him to elevate you when the time is right, and in the meantime, serve with a heart of humility, knowing He is always at work.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, keep pride from my heart. Help me to find joy and contentment in the place you have me right now. If it’s your will to promote me, I trust your timing. But until then, let my life bring honor to you right where I am. Amen.
