Then Moses said to the LORD, “O my Lord, I am not an eloquent man, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant, for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

Exodus 4:10

Into the Text

I am someone who really likes to know what I’m doing. If I’m driving to a new place, I will study the map beforehand so that I have an idea of the route in case the GPS doesn’t work. Some people might say it’s a sign of my desire to control. I like to think of it as being well prepared.

God called Moses to do a seemingly impossible task: lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. God promised that He would be the One to deliver the people (Exodus 3:8). Moses simply needed to trust Him.

Rather than responding with a resounding “yes,” Moses responded with fear and trepidation. His doubts and fears were focused on his own limitations rather than on God’s infinite power. Even though God continued to show Moses that he would have access to the power of the Almighty, Moses doubted and made excuses.

Amazingly, God still chose to use Moses. No matter how many times Moses tried to back out of God’s call, God continued to remind him that he would not be alone. God would do the work. Moses simply needed to trust and obey Him.

God is the all-powerful Creator who gives each of us unique gifts to build up His kingdom. He doesn’t need us, but He chooses to welcome and use us into His mission of redemption. We simply have to trust and obey Him.

God may be calling you into something new, something you’re not sure you are ready for. Let me encourage you to say yes. God is with you and will supply all that you need to accomplish His purposes.

Prayer

God, thank you for inviting me into your kingdom work. May I be obedient to your call and obedient to use the gifts you supply, leaning on you every step of the way. Amen.
