The Value of a Humble Heart

“For by the grace given to me I say to every one of you not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think, but to think with sober discernment, as God has distributed to each of you a measure of faith.”

Romans 12:3

Into the Text

Humility is recognizing who we are in light of who God is and understanding that we deserve nothing on our own. In Romans 12:3, Paul calls us to live humbly, but not by diminishing ourselves or denying our value. Instead, he urges us to view ourselves through the lens of God’s holiness, knowing that every good thing in our lives is a gift from Him. We are sinners saved by grace, and everything we possess—whether abilities, talents, or opportunities—comes from the generous hand of our loving Father.

True humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves; it’s about recognizing that God is the source of all the good in our lives. When we live with this perspective, it shapes how we see and treat others. Humility leads us to honor others, to value them as God does, and to extend grace and kindness, knowing that we’ve been given so much grace ourselves.

In today’s reading from Esther, we see a vivid contrast between humility and pride. Haman was consumed with thoughts of his own glory, but God was at work behind the scenes, elevating someone with a heart that sought Him. Esther’s story reminds us that God values humble hearts—those who rely on Him and seek to love others as He has loved us.

Sweet friend, let’s live with eyes that see God’s hand in every blessing. Let’s be quick to give Him praise and humbly serve those around us, knowing that every good and perfect gift comes from Him. As we embrace humility, we become a reflection of His love and grace to a world that desperately needs it.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, give me eyes to see that all good things in my life come from you. Fill my heart with gratitude for your love, mercy, and grace. Help me to live with a humble spirit, extending the same love and grace to others that you have so generously given to me. Amen.
