Let your beauty not be external–the braiding of hair and wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes–but the inner person of the heart, the lasting beauty of a gentle and tranquil spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.
Into the Text
I’m sure if we talked face-to-face, most of us would admit we spend a lot of time thinking about how we look on the outside. And while taking care of ourselves is a good thing, God gently invites us in 1 Peter 3 to pay attention to something much more important: how beautiful we are on the inside.
First Peter 3 points us toward a beauty that goes so much deeper than anything we could put on in the morning.
Unfading. I love that word. Everything the world calls beautiful will eventually fade away. But the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit? It only becomes more beautiful the longer a woman walks with God.
And it is important we understand what Peter means by a gentle and quiet spirit. He is not describing a woman who never speaks up or never has an opinion. He is describing a woman whose inner life is so rooted and settled in God that she doesn’t need the world’s approval to feel secure. A woman who doesn’t need to demand her own way because she trusts God with the outcome. A woman whose strength is calm and anchored rather than anxious and striving.
So what does cultivating that kind of beauty look like practically? It looks like spending more time reading God’s Word than in front of the mirror. It looks like asking God to tend to the condition of your heart the way you tend to your appearance. It looks like choosing stillness and trust in the moments when anxiety wants to take over.
This is the beauty God sees when He looks at you, sweet sister. You are more beautiful than you know. And the most beautiful thing about you is what He is growing in your heart.
