“He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds, crushed because of our sins; he endured punishment that made us well; because of his wounds we have been healed. All of us had wandered off like sheep; each of us had strayed off on his own path, but the Lord caused the sin of all of us to attack him. He was treated harshly and afflicted, but he did not even open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughtering block, like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not even open his mouth.”
Isaiah 53:5-7
Into the Text
Long before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the prophet Isaiah gave us a glimpse of the cross. A Savior would come—not as a triumphant warrior but as a servant. A man of sorrows. A man familiar with grief. One who would carry the weight of our sins on His shoulders.
Jesus didn’t come to win the applause of the world. He came to be pierced, crushed, and wounded for us.
It’s hard to read these verses without feeling the weight of it all. These aren’t just poetic phrases. They are the brutal reality of what Jesus willingly endured to bring us healing. He suffered, so we could be reconciled to God.
He suffered silently.
Willingly.
Lovingly.
Like a lamb led to the slaughter, Jesus didn’t resist. He didn’t run. He didn’t speak a word in His own defense. He chose the cross so that we could know Him and seek His forgiveness, healing, and peace.
Sweet friend, the cross wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t a tragic ending. It was the fulfillment of a plan made from the very beginning of time. A plan to rescue you. A plan to make a way back to the Father. Salvation can only be found by faith in Jesus.
Let your heart pause here today. Let the weight of His sacrifice wash over you. Because of His wounds, you are healed. Because of His suffering, you are free.
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for taking my place and for bearing my sin. Help me never to forget the cost of my salvation. Let my heart live in gratitude for the price you paid. Amen.
