The Power of a Gentle Answer

A gentle response turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.

Proverbs 15:1

Into the Text

I have said things I wish I could take back. I think most of us have. Words spoken in a moment of frustration, exhaustion, or hurt that came out sharper and landed harder than I intended.

But I have also felt what a gentle word can do. At different times in my life, God has used friends, family members, and even women from our community to speak or write words into my life that I needed to hear at exactly the right moment. Gentleness does that. It has a way of reaching the tender, guarded places in our hearts that nothing else seems to touch.

Proverbs 15:1 is not just good advice. It is a spiritual principle at work in every conversation, conflict, and difficult relationship in our lives. And it is one of the most practical ways we can live out the fruit of gentleness every single day.

I love how Moses modeled this. When Miriam and Aaron publicly spoke against him, Moses didn’t launch a counterattack. He didn’t use his authority to silence them or his words to wound them. He responded with such gentleness that God Himself stepped in to handle what Moses left in His hands.

So what does this look like in your everyday life? It looks like taking a breath before you respond to the text that made you mad. It looks like lowering your voice instead of raising it when a conversation starts to heat up. It looks like choosing to listen before you defend yourself.

None of those responses comes naturally. Every single one of them requires the Holy Spirit working in us and through us.

Gentleness doesn’t mean you don’t speak. It means you speak in a way that opens doors instead of slamming them shut. And that kind of gentleness, rooted in the Spirit, has the power to turn entire conversations around.
