The Flight from Egypt

The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, and they gave them whatever they wanted, and so they plundered Egypt.

Exodus 12:36

Into the Text

God always keeps His promises. This truth is something we can easily say that we know but quickly forget in practice. But God is faithful and provides us moments of clear examples of His promise-keeping ways in order to strengthen our faith.

As Pharaoh and the Egyptians were pushing the Israelites out the door, God’s promise was fulfilled. Many years earlier, God had told Abraham that his family would be slaves in Egypt but that He would deliver them from slavery (Genesis 15:13–14). God delivered on His promise in a spectacular way.

Imagine the surprise of the Israelites who had been begging God to deliver them from slavery. The very ones who had been their captors and enemies were now giving them their silver and whatever they asked for! Only God could make this happen.

Notice that the people of Israel were seemingly caught off guard as well. They did not even have food prepared to escape. God’s timing is not our own.

Whether you’re in a season of waiting for God to come through on His promises, wondering what promises God has made to you, or living in the blessing of God’s fulfilled promise, know that God is forever faithful. He will never fail you.

He always provides in greater ways than we expect. God does not run on our time table, but He is sovereignly at work to bring about His plan at the perfect time. May we never become too distracted or too inattentive to stand in awe of our good and loving God and His promise-keeping ways.

Prayer

God, thank you that you are a promise-keeper. I pray that you would help me to trust you each day and never grow weary of believing that you will come through. Amen.
