“They were devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
“And let us take thought of how to spur one another on to love and good works, not abandoning our own meetings, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and even more so because you see the day drawing near.”
Into the Text
Fellowship is an important aspect of the Christian life, reflecting the community and unity God exemplifies in the Trinity. Acts 2:42 illustrates the early church’s priority and commitment to fellowship.
From the outset, God created us for community. In the Garden of Eden, God walked with Adam and Eve, demonstrating that fellowship is integral to His plan. When we engage in regular fellowship with other believers, we find strength and encouragement in our faith. Meeting together as a church body reminds us who God is, who we are in light of His character, and the mission we are on to further the kingdom of Christ. It is where we can live out the “one anothers” of Scripture by spurring one another on in love and good works.
Fellowship gives us opportunities to learn from each other and be held accountable. In a community of believers, we can confess our sins, pray for each other, and support one another through life’s ups and downs. Mutual confession and prayer bring healing and foster spiritual growth, strengthening our walk with Christ.
Jesus Himself modeled the importance of fellowship by sharing meals with His disciples. These moments of breaking bread, teaching, and praying together show the profound connection and support that comes from living in community. Fellowship draws us closer to God and to each other, creating a loving, supportive community of believers.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for the gift of fellowship. Help me prioritize gathering with other believers and sharing our lives and faith together. Strengthen our connections within the body of Christ and use our fellowship to encourage and build each other up. May our community reflect your love and bring glory to your name. In your name, Amen.
