Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for the display of all patience and steadfastness, joyfully giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.
Into the Text
As Paul prays for the Colossians’ growth and maturity, he specifically asks God for them to grow in courage, endurance, patience, and steadfastness in their Christian walk. He tells them that they need to be strengthened by God’s power, for it is the only place to find help.
God is willing to help us in our weakness with His “glorious might.” We do not need to rely on our own strength but trust that God’s power may be shown greatly, even (and especially) in our weakness. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that “[Christ’s] grace is enough for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
This strength that God gives will be displayed in our ability to live our lives with “all patience and steadfastness.” While we are in this world, we will continually have to carry our cross, be faced with countless heartaches, and weighed down by painful circumstances. However, God can strengthen us with His might, giving us the power not only to endure our hardships but even to do so joyfully.
We can then be patient in our suffering, knowing that God has ordained it and will work something good out of it (Romans 8:28). He has prepared a bright future for us. We can trust His promises and thank Him for it.
Let’s remember what great power God has placed at our disposal. Today, when you feel weak, impatient, and ready to give up, ask Him to strengthen you according to His glorious might.
Prayer
Lord, you are my all-powerful and all-enabling Father. Thank you for your promise of a wonderful future in heaven. While I wait, please strengthen me so that I can be patient and steadfast in my present situation. Amen.
