Strength in Opposition

The LORD said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders I have put under your control. But I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go.”

Exodus 4:21

Into the Text

After meeting with God at the burning bush, Moses now embarks on his mission to Egypt where he will ask Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. On the way, he relays God’s plan to his brother Aaron, who will be his spokesman to Pharaoh and partner in the mission.

Though God promised Moses complete deliverance for the people, the journey to freedom would not be without its challenges. In fact, God tells Moses that Pharaoh will refuse to let the Israelites go.

Pharaoh’s hardened heart will be the source of the mission’s continued opposition. But God will remain in control.

For believers today, we are all called to live our lives on mission to proclaim the gospel throughout the world (Matthew 28:19-20). Like Moses, we, too, will face opposition (Matthew 5:10–12; John 16:33).

Opposition does not necessarily mean that we have done something wrong or are not walking in accordance with God’s will. It often signals that we are walking in lockstep with God to the place where He has sent us.

The difference is knowing that persecutions and hardships can come; therefore, we must continually rely on the Lord for strength, endurance, and guidance.

Moses and Aaron needed the guidance of God every step of the way in their calling. We are no different. We must not be surprised if challenges or roadblocks arise. Instead, let’s continually rely on the Lord for strength, endurance, and guidance, for He can be trusted.

Prayer

God, thank you that you are always in control. When opposition comes, may I rely on you for every step that I take. I pray that hardship would not distract or dissuade me but lead me to find strength in you alone. Amen.
