In my heart I store up your words, so I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:11

Into the Text

What we love, we store in our hearts. Storing God’s Word up in our hearts is more than just intellectual knowledge of what the Bible says. This verse makes it clear that the right sort of “storing up” bears fruit in our lives. When we seek to understand and memorize the Bible with our minds, we must also be willing for those words to influence our hearts, wills, and consciences. Only then will we have victory over sin, being able to withstand the temptations. When we love God, we will love and keep His Word.

When our hearts seek after God, our feet will follow Him. Stored-up head knowledge doesn’t change us if it doesn’t eventually move into our hearts and change our lives. The outpouring of our hearts is a desire to live lives that glorify God because we love Him.

In a world constantly trying to distract us, tempt us, and pull us away from God, it is important that we make a deliberate effort to know God’s Word and store it in our hearts. Whether it’s reading the Bible, memorizing Scripture, or spending time in prayer, making time for God’s Word should be a priority in all our lives as we seek to know and love God more.

When we store God’s Word in our hearts, we are equipping ourselves with the sword of the Spirit, giving us access to Scripture when we need it.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, I love You. Help me to store Your Words in my heart and value them as treasures. Help me always be motivated by my love for You, and keep me from sinning against You. I want more head knowledge that turns into greater heart knowledge. Help me store Your Word in my heart so that I don’t sin against You. Amen.
