“Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; remain in my love.”
Into the Text
Jesus gives us a beautiful picture in John 15. He describes Himself as the vine and us as the branches. Right in the middle of that image, He says something that is both a command and an invitation wrapped up in three small words: Remain in me.
The Greek word used here is meno, and it means to stay, to dwell, or to make your permanent home in. This is not a casual visit. Jesus is not describing a routine Sunday morning church attendance or a quick prayer when life gets hard. He is describing a continuous, uninterrupted, ongoing connection. Branches don’t occasionally attach themselves to a vine, but they are permanently, vitally, and inseparably joined to it.
Jesus never said we had to earn His love, perform for His love, or work hard enough to deserve His love. He said that we have to remain in it. We simply must stay.
And here is what He promises when we do. His joy will be in us, and our joy will be complete. When we stay rooted in His love, love becomes the natural overflow of our lives.
This is so freeing, isn’t it? What a comfort it is to know that we don’t have to chase love down or manufacture it. We don’t have to white-knuckle our way through loving difficult people. We simply have to stay close to the One who is love and let it flow from Him through us.
But remaining requires intentionality; it’s a daily choice. It requires being in God’s Word when life gets busy. It requires prayer when we’d rather scroll. It requires choosing closeness with Jesus over the countless distractions that pull at us all day long.
Choosing to remain in Jesus is one of the most important choices you will make. It is a daily choice that has ripple effects through your life and for the generations after you…just stay. You are so dearly wanted.
