But practicing the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head.
Into the Text
I know the thought of speaking the truth in love can make you feel sick to your stomach. It’s hard to be uncompromising of truth, compassionate toward others, and also unafraid of what they may say or think. While I’d never claim that I walk this out perfectly in my life, and admit that I have made many mistakes in this areas through the years, I have learned one secret: When I do feel called to speak the truth to someone, I make sure the reason I speak to them is because of my love and compassion for them. Motivation is key. When I’m motivated by my love for that person and my love for God, I can speak truth in love.
Jesus modeled this delicate balance perfectly. When we choose to speak truth in love, we follow Christ’s example and set ourselves apart in a world where people often prioritize pleasing others over being honest.
Choosing to speak the truth should be done in love. It should not be spoken in anger or with pride. Instead, it might be gently sharing with a friend your concern over her recent decisions or having a tough conversation with a loved one about an unhealthy behavior that is causing you concern for their future. When we speak the truth in love, we show our love for the person and point them back to Jesus.
Speaking the truth in love also doesn’t mean sugar-coating or avoiding hard conversations when they are needed. Instead, it means approaching these situations in prayer and with grace, understanding, and love, desiring to see the other person flourish in their walk with God.
Don’t let fear hold you back from speaking the truth in love. Pray and trust that God will guide you in these moments. When you choose to follow Christ’s example, you will experience the joy and freedom that comes from living a life of truth and love, choosing the hard when it is for the benefit of the individual.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank You for teaching me the importance of speaking the truth in love. Help me to be bold in my conversations and always to prioritize Your truth, spoken in love, above all else. Amen.
