For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Into the Text
It is amazing to realize the King of kings who created the earth and everyone in it humbled Himself and chose to serve those He made. In Mark 10 we see Jesus having an important conversation with His disciples about who is the greatest in His kingdom. To the disciples’ surprise, Jesus pointed out that true greatness comes not from being served, but from serving others. Life isn’t about titles, power, or positions. It’s not about who you sit with, but rather who you serve. Jesus set the ultimate example by serving to the point of giving His life as a ransom for many.
And this upside-down way of living is the example Jesus sets for us, too. As His followers, we’re called to do the same. But you know what? It’s not always easy, is it? The world tells us to look out for number one: yourself. If you aren’t looking out for yourself, who is? According to the world, what’s most important in life is your happiness, not your holiness.
Yet, Jesus calls us to a different way of life. He calls us to serve and love others, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. Why? Because when we follow Christ’s example of serving others and putting their needs above our own, we display His love and grace to the world. When we choose to live like Jesus, we bear witness to the transformative power of the gospel. We become a light in the darkness, reflecting the heart of Jesus to those around us.
The truth is, serving others can look different for each person. The key to serving others is asking God for guidance and being willing to step out in faith when He shows us opportunities to serve and live set apart.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, help me to serve others with the same love and humility that You displayed. Help me to serve those You have placed in my life, reflecting Your heart to a hurting world. Amen.
